Literary work

Hermann Sergo has written numerous works of fiction in which the sea plays a major role. Seafarers and coastal residents are the focus of his stories and novels. They often reflect personal experiences, such as the story Meri kutsub (1960) and the short story book Kui ma alles veel noor olin (1980). The novel Põgenike laev (1966) deals for the first time with the flight of the Estonian coastal inhabitants in 1944 from the Soviet occupation of Estonia.

1984 was published in three volumes Sergos Roman Näkimadalad . The title is derived from the shoal of the same name (German Neckmans-Grund ) north-northwest of the island of Hiiumaa. Sergo describes the tragic fate of the Estonian Swedes in the 18th century in the village of Reigi on the island of Hiiumaa, who eventually lose their freedom and are deported to southern Ukraine on the orders of the Russian tsarina. The novel begins with the Russian conquest of Swedish Estonia in 1710. Sergo received the Johan Smuul Prize for this the following year . In 1989 the book was made into a film.

The novel Randröövel deals with the life of the devious Baltic German nobleman Otto Reinhold Ludwig von Ungern-Sternberg (1744–1811). In addition, Sergo published the adventure novel Vihavald (1970), set in the 14th century .
