Otto Reinhold Ludwig von Ungern-Sternberg ( Russian Отто Рейнгольд Людвиг Унгерн фон Штернберг ) (* August 5 jul. / 16th August  1744 greg. On Kusthof in Livonia ; † August 2 jul. / 14. August  1811 greg. In Tobolsk ) was a Polish chamberlain and envoy as well as an Estonian shipowner and landowner.

Life

His parents were Reinhold Gustav von Ungern-Sternberg (* 1714; † 1787) and his wife Christina Sophia von Rosen (* 1719; † 1797). Ungern studied at the University of Leipzig , traveled to Asia and the Indian Ocean . Concerned that he might endanger the British East India Company's monopoly on trade and transport , he was accused of espionage by the British Indian authorities during the Seven Years' War and deported to Europe.

He was chamberlain and envoy of Stanislaus II August Poniatowski to the Tsarina Catherine II (Russia) at Peterhof Palace . In 1781 he acquired the Großenhof manor on Dagö , but was still the master of Neukusthof in Livonia and of Neuenhof, Hohenholm , Pardas and Putkas in Estonia . Reluctantly was in the rank of Dutch captain. In 1802 he was arrested on charges of murdering Carl Johan Malmi, the captain of the brig Morian . In the legal proceedings, he relied on self-defense . He was convicted and exiled to Tobolsk . He worked there during the reign of Emperor Alexander I in administration.

Ungern was married to Magdalene Charlotte von der Pahlen (* 1749, † 1824) since 1772 , with whom he had four children.

In England he was posthumously declared a beach robber . In 1928 István Csekey scientifically investigated the allegation of piracy against Ungern and reduced it to absurdity .
