Michael Walter (translator)
Michael Walter (born January 4, 1951 in Wiesbaden ) is a German translator .
Life
After graduating from high school, Michael Walter studied philosophy and English at the Universities of Mannheim and Freiburg im Breisgau . He graduated with a master's degree and has been working as a freelance translator ever since. He is based in Munich and in 1988 held a lectureship on "literary translation" at the University of Munich . He mainly translates fiction from English .
In his laudation on the awarding of the Johann Heinrich Voss Prize, Hans Wollschläger said that in his translation of Tristram Shandy , Walter had given “the heavy German tongue that quick blow” which “made the maddening tender flutter of these very serious jokes audible” .
Michael Walter is a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt , the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts and the Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works (VdÜ).
