James Graham Ballard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

James Graham Ballard (known under the writer name JG Ballard ; born November 15, 1930 in Shanghai , † April 19, 2009 in Shepperton ) was a British writer . His work is characterized by a wide range in the selection of the genres science fiction , contemporary novel and experimental literature .

Life

Ballard's father, a chemist, ran the Shanghai branch of a British textile company. James Ballard grew up in the international settlement there. After the attack on Pearl Harbor , Japan occupied the settlement and began interning Allied civilians in the spring of 1943 . For more than two years, until the end of World War II , Ballard's family was held in Longhua, a Japanese civil prison camp in Shanghai. In 1946 his mother and sister returned with him to England, but left him there in the care of his grandparents and went back to China to see Ballard's father. Ballard began studying medicine at King's College in 1949 to become a psychiatrist. In 1951 his story The Violent Moon appeared in a student magazine. He switched to English literature at Queen Mary and Westfield College and left university without a degree. He then worked as a copywriter and encyclopedia seller before joining the Royal Air Force in 1953 to fulfill his dream of flying. The military sent Ballard to an RCAF training base in Moose Jaw , Canada . Airplanes and flying were to be a recurring motif in his texts from then on. In Canada he also came into contact with US science fiction.

On his return he married and moved to Chiswick with his wife Mary in 1955 . In 1960 the couple settled in the London suburb of Shepperton , which later earned them the nickname "Prophet of Shepperton". Ballard worked as an editor for a scientific journal and wrote on the side. In 1956, his first science fiction story, Prima Belladonna, was published in New Worlds magazine. The magazine's editor, Edward J. Carnell, became a sponsor of Ballard in the years that followed and printed almost all of its texts. Ballard wrote his first novel, The Wind from Nowhere, while on vacation for two weeks . The book is about inexplicable strong storms that destroy human civilization and the way people behave in the face of such a catastrophe; both global catastrophe and its effects on the human psyche were constants in Ballard's work in the 1960s. The success of The Drowned World (1963) enabled him to live as a freelance writer.

Ballard's wife died of pneumonia while on vacation in Spain in 1964, and Ballard raised his three children alone. His friends and literary companions included the fantasy writer and musician Michael Moorcock . He had been dating the journalist and editor Claire Walsh since 1969, but they only lived together in the last few months before his death. Walsh is considered to be the model for the character of Catherine in Crash . With Miracles of Life he presented his autobiography in 2008, after he had already worked through his life literarily - partly heavily fictionalized - in Empire of the Sun and The Kindness of Women .

Ballard was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2006 , which resulted in his death three years later.

subjects

Many of his novels and short stories draft dystopias and doomsday scenarios in which Ballard describes the disintegration of social structures and ties in the face of doom. Among other things, he considers the conflict between the possibilities of radical individuality and residual loyalty to the remaining social norms.

The catastrophe cycle, consisting of his first four novels, originated in the 1960s and is about the destruction of our known world and the fall of civilization. In The Wind From Nowhere, a steadily swelling storm sweeps the surface of the earth bare. Life is only possible in a gigantic concrete bunker built by a rich entrepreneur. In The Drowned World , increased temperatures cause the sea level to rise and transform the entire environment into a primeval jungle landscape, in which new forms of life are created. In The Burning World , chemical residues prevent seawater from evaporating and trigger a devastating global drought that dramatically changes landscapes and people. In Crystal World , a disease triggered by a shift in time affects people, animals and vegetation and transforms them into crystalline structures. The phenomenon, which first appeared in a region of West Africa , is spreading rapidly. Ballard later took up the theme of transformed time from Crystal World again in longer stories such as Memories of the Space Age .

In the 1970s, Ballard looked for the catastrophe in locally limited, urban scenarios: Crash depicts the erotic attraction of fatal car accidents, and Concrete Island observes life on island-like stretches of land that are completely enclosed by impassable motorway routes. His last novels varied the theme of the saturated consumer society that tries to escape its rigidity in individual or collective acts of violence.

Ballard's works are divided into traditionally narrative works that work with a dense, pictorial language and into experimental ones, e.g. B. Use collage techniques. His recurring images and motifs such as barren, deserted landscapes or the psychological effects of technological, social and ecological upheavals coined the adjective "ballardian". Ballard himself named surrealism and psychoanalysis as influences on his writing .

Especially with his short stories, Ballard is an important representative of slipstream literature in science fiction.

Ballard was a source of inspiration in popular music, including the band Ultravox , Ian Curtis from Joy Division, Genesis P-Orridge from Throbbing Gristle , The Normal , Sol Invictus , Exodus ( The Atrocity Exhibition - Exhibit A ), Moritz Eggert and Michael Fruit . His 1960 published short story The Sound-Sweep ( The sound of vacuum cleaners ) inspired 1979 The Buggles to her hit video killed the radio star . The experimental rock band " The Sound Of Animals Fighting " was just as inspired by Ballard as "The Comsat Angels", who named themselves after one of his short stories.
