Lore Strassl

Lore Straßl (born August 31, 1930 ; † June 3, 2003 in Steinberg near Büchlberg ) was a German translator and editor.

As an editor at Pabel Verlag she was in charge of the SF novel series Utopia under the name Lore Matthaey and, from 1962, the chaotically started series Mark Powers . She edited a number of anthologies and broadcasted, among others, Poul Anderson , Robert Asprin , Leigh Brackett , John Brunner , Lin Carter , Lyon Sprague de Camp , David Eddings , Alan Dean Foster , Robert E. Howard , John Jakes , Richard Matheson , Abraham Merritt , Michael Moorcock , Andre Norton , Diana L. Paxson , Thomas Burnett Swann and Jack Vance into German . Their translations contributed significantly to the interest in Fantasy and the American and English authors. From the 1960s until her death, she was one of the most prolific translators in the genre.

In 1985, 1986 and 1987 she received the Kurd-Laßwitz Prize for best translator, as her work was valued for her sensitivity and language skills.

She was married to Hubert Straßl for the second time . Her daughter Susi Grixa also works as a translator, in some cases she worked with her mother. Lore Straßl died in 2003 of the sequelae of Lyme borreliosis caused by a tick bite .
