Utopia science fiction
Utopia science fiction was the first West German science fiction - pulp novel series and was published from 1953 to 1968 in 596 expenditure Erich Pabel Verlag , Rastatt .
Concept, authors
Utopia was published fortnightly with initially 48 pages at a price of 50 pfennigs . The first 43 volumes revolved around the space adventures of protagonist Jim Parker. Most of the novels in Jim Parker's space adventure series were written under the publishing pseudonym Alf Tjörnsen . Other publishing pseudonyms were Axel Nord , James Norton and Ed Kinson .
After that both editions of German as well as translations of Anglo-American authors appeared, with attempts at times to establish other series heroes such as Mark Powers and Chet Morrow in the series, which however failed. Some Jim Parker editions continued to appear. Mark Powers received his own series from 1962 to 1966, but the attempt to build on the success of the dominant series Perry Rhodan failed after 48 issues.
Although works by Murray Leinster , Stanley G. Weinbaum , Brian W. Aldiss or John Brunner were also published, some of which had been greatly reduced to the magazine format, the bulk of the editions initially came from loan book production :
“A look back at the 596 published titles shows that the majority of the publications belong to the dregs of science fiction: the most banal products by German authors ... and usually catastrophic translations by third-rate foreign SF writers ... The last 200 volumes, however, included anthologies of - measured by the standard of magazine novels - partly exquisite quality ... "
Regardless of this, Utopia was the reason for Munich-based Moewig-Verlag to launch its own series Terra Utopian Novels as a competitor on the market from 1957 . Terra appeared in 555 editions until 1968 and was continued with Terra Nova and Terra Astra .
Both Utopia and Terra were entry-level literature for young science fiction readers in the 1950s and 1960s and offered limited initial publication opportunities for up-and-coming authors.

Remarks:
Sub-series
This magazine series was published from 1954 to 1963 in 204 issues and was initially supervised by Clark Darlton, who wrote the letters to the editor Meteoriten nach Alpers u. a. made into a first forum for German science fiction fans. As with the main series, the quality of translations suffered from the rigorous cuts.
- Utopia magazine
Originally conceived as a Utopia special volume in 1955 , the magazine, which initially comprised 128 pages, was published under the new title from issue No. 3 to 1959 and reached 26 issues. It was Pabel Verlag's first attempt to expand its SF program; Clark Darlton was the publisher.
The magazine was a well-illustrated mix of short stories, mostly of American origin, scientific articles, book reviews, and letters to the editor. Some of the stories came from Isaac Asimov , Robert A. Heinlein , Arthur C. Clarke or Ray Bradbury . Darlton later handed the magazine over to Walter Spiegl (pseudonyms Bert Horsley and Bert Koeppen).
- Utopia Future Paperback Books
From 1960 to 1967 ten titles were published in the Pabel pocket books series . The volumes did not have their own numbering.
- Utopia Classics
Between 1979 and 1986, 86 notebooks in the series were reissued as paperbacks. Initially from Pabel Verlag, from No. 39 (March 1982) as UTOPIA CLASSICS paperback from Moewig Verlag.
- Utopia crime and utopia crime
The booklet series was published in 26 issues from 1956 to 1958. The series originally appeared as a sub-series (detective novels from the world of tomorrow) in the series Utopia Großband . The series also published two French novels by Jean David: The Experiment of Horror (Une Chose Dans la Nuit) and Benoit Becker: The Spider of Death (Expedition Epouvante) .
In this series, older KH Scheer titles appeared monthly in paperback form, which had previously appeared in loan book form or in another series of novels, with the volumes ZBV appearing in a separate series.
