Ray Cummings

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Raymond King Cummings (born August 30, 1887 in New York City ; died January 23, 1957 in Mount Vernon , New York ) was an American science fiction and detective story writer in the era of pulp magazines .

Life

Cummings was the son of a wealthy New York family. He began studying at Princeton University , but after only two months he took his family to Puerto Rico , where his father owned an orange plantation. In his youth he worked in oil fields in Wyoming and mines in British Columbia and Alaska . From 1914 to 1919 he was editor of various magazines at Thomas A. Edison and during this time wrote his first SF story, The Girl in the Golden Atom , which was published in March 1919 by All-Story Weekly . This was followed by six sequels under the title The People of the Golden Atom and in 1922 he summarized all parts for a fix-up .

The story is about a journey into the world of atoms. According to a popular understanding of Bohr's atomic model, the atom resembles a small solar system in which the atomic nucleus corresponds to the sun and the electrons orbiting the nucleus correspond to the planets. The hero of Cummings' tale can visit such a planet, actually inhabited by intelligent beings, and experience his adventures there by using a diminutive drug. The story was a great success at the time and the author was enthusiastically described as an "American HG Wells ". It has been found that such a comparison is entirely correct on an ironic level, in that there are very substantial structural parallels between Wells ' journey through time and Cummings' journey into the atomic world. The Girl in the Golden Atom ( Matter ), together with two novels that have not been reprinted ( Space ) and a group of three novels ( Time ), which deal with time travel, form the loosely connected cycle Matter, Space and Time .

As a result, Cummings became one of the most prolific writers of the Pulp era, although the number of stories he published is not clear. According to John Clute , he is said to have published over 750 stories under various pseudonyms and in various genres. RD Mullen, on the other hand, counts 134 SF short stories, 22 of which are novels or short stories in length. In any case, it is clear that the number is large and that Cummings was present as an author over a long period of time, namely from 1919 to the end of the 1950s, i.e. a good four decades.

Critics of his work, however, missed the development in this long time, both in terms of writing technique and the reception of scientific and technical progress. This deficiency is also attributed to the fact that Cummings barely succeeded in making the leap from magazine to book publication. There were hardly any anthologies of his stories and his longer stories appeared as a magazine series and then not for a long time. It was only during the pulp nostalgia that began in the 1960s that his novels were published as books, often more than 40 years after they were first printed.

Despite these shortcomings, as John Clute states, his numerous contributions can today be recognized as entirely honorable and fruitful in their context, and the contribution of their author to the history of the SF can be considered certain. In addition, some of the Cummings' concepts and equipment, which have become standard equipment in the SF, were used for the first time, such as artificial gravity.

At a time already diminishing success in the 1940s, Cummings worked with his daughter Betty and wrote the script for a series of early Captain America - Comics , where he also material from Princess of the atomic recycled.

In 2010, Cummings was posthumously awarded the First Fandom Hall of Fame Award .

Individual evidence

  1. According to Mullen, the series is actually an afterthought, originally a "trilogy" consisting of the novels The Girl in the Golden Atom , The Fire People and The Man Who Mastered Time , to which the thematically more or less appropriate three other novels The Princess of the Atom ( Space # 2), The Shadow Girl ( Time # 2) and The Exile of Time ( Time # 3).
