Utopia large band

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Utopia large band was in Erich Pabel Verlag in Rastatt appearing German science fiction - pulp novel series and was a secondary series of seemingly the same publisher series Utopia science fiction .

It appeared from 1954 to 1963 in 204 editions and was initially overseen by Walter Ernsting , who made the letters to the editor “Meteoriten” a first forum for German science fiction fans and also provided numerous translations. Initially, only translations from English should be offered in the series. So she started with translations of rather secondary Anglo-Saxon authors. Soon there was trickery. Novels written by German authors were given fictitious English original titles and published under pseudonyms . This applies to novels nos. 9, 14, 17, 19 and 20 by the authors Joachim Rennau (pseudonym: James S. White), Kurt Walter Roecken (Henry Walter) and Walter Ernsting (Clark Darlton).

Later works by other German authors such as WD Rohr , KH Scheer and Walter Spiegl (Bert Koeppen) were also published openly .

As with the Utopia science fiction, the quality of translations suffered from the brutal cuts with which entire novels were trimmed to the size of the magazine.

From around issue 30 the level of the series rose and some classics of American science fiction appeared here for the first time in German , albeit often in mutilated form.

From volume 197 the series was renamed in Utopia special volume , which occasionally leads to confusion, since the first two issues of the Utopia magazine also carried this name. From then on it was also published in a smaller format up to volume 201.

Remarks:

1According to the booklet archive , it is suspected that John Bird is the author, but this is not considered to be certain.
2According to the booklet archive , it is suspected that Denis Hughes is the author, but this is not considered to be certain.
3Inside is Berl Cameron , on the envelope Bert Cameron , which is probably a misspelling, as this pseudonyn doesn't exist anywhere else.
4thHere: John S. Glasby together with Arthur Roberts .
5Together with Darlton, expanded short story by Gallun .
6thAs with some of the original English-language editions, co-author van Vogt is not given.
7thNot to be confused with Volume 2 of the same name in the series “The Galactic War” ( Terra Extra # 50). Probably a title mix-up when it was re-released in 1972.
8th Rand la Page is a misspelling of Rand Le Page that appears on the cover as well as in the booklet.
9Extended book version of the series "The Escape" from Space Science Fiction magazine , of which only the first part of two planned was published in 1953 because the magazine was discontinued.
10Published under the joint pseudonym of Earl and Otto Binder , but written by the latter alone. Therefore linked to him.
11Published here like a novel without an individual title. It was not until 1963 that Heinlein reworked and expanded the novel "Orphans of the Sky" (German 1967 by Heyne).
12Although published under one of the community pseudonyms of CL Moore and Henry Kuttner , it was, according to a statement by Moore , written by Kuttner alone. Therefore linked to him.
13Under the pseudonym JE Wells, mostly used by Eberhard Seitz .
14thHere: Lionel Fanthorpe together with his wife Patricia Fanthorpe .
15thThe cover incorrectly mentions Ted Scott as the author.
16Here: Kurt Herwarth Ball together with Lothar Weise .
17thCommunity pseudonym of Gudrun Voigt and her husband Karl Voigt .
