Utopia large band
Utopia large band was in Erich Pabel Verlag in Rastatt appearing German science fiction - pulp novel series and was a secondary series of seemingly the same publisher series Utopia science fiction .
It appeared from 1954 to 1963 in 204 editions and was initially overseen by Walter Ernsting , who made the letters to the editor “Meteoriten” a first forum for German science fiction fans and also provided numerous translations. Initially, only translations from English should be offered in the series. So she started with translations of rather secondary Anglo-Saxon authors. Soon there was trickery. Novels written by German authors were given fictitious English original titles and published under pseudonyms . This applies to novels nos. 9, 14, 17, 19 and 20 by the authors Joachim Rennau (pseudonym: James S. White), Kurt Walter Roecken (Henry Walter) and Walter Ernsting (Clark Darlton).
Later works by other German authors such as WD Rohr , KH Scheer and Walter Spiegl (Bert Koeppen) were also published openly .
As with the Utopia science fiction, the quality of translations suffered from the brutal cuts with which entire novels were trimmed to the size of the magazine.
From around issue 30 the level of the series rose and some classics of American science fiction appeared here for the first time in German , albeit often in mutilated form.
From volume 197 the series was renamed in Utopia special volume , which occasionally leads to confusion, since the first two issues of the Utopia magazine also carried this name. From then on it was also published in a smaller format up to volume 201.
