R. Lionel Fanthorpe

Richard Lionel Fanthorpe (born February 9, 1935 in Dereham , Norfolk ) is a British writer, television presenter, teacher and priest. He is best known as the most productive author in the field of science fiction , fantasy and horror literature at times .

Life

Fanthorpe's parents were the shopkeeper and the teacher Greta Christine, née Garbutt. From 1958 to 1962 he was a teacher at Dereham Secondary Modern School , then studied from 1961 to 1963 Education and Theology at Keswick College in Norwich , and was then again a teacher until 1967, after which he served in the British Army and was a tutor at Gamlingay Village College in Gamlingay , Cambridgeshire and instructor at the Phoenix Timber Company in Rainham from 1969 to 1972 . From 1972 to 1979 he was principal at Hellesdon High School in Norfolk . In 1974 he received his bachelor's degree from the Open University .

In the early 1950s, Fanthorpe began writing short stories that appeared in various John Spencer & Co. magazines such as Futuristic Science Stories and Worlds of Fantasy . From 1954 onwards, Fanthorpe's novels appeared mainly in the Badger Books series of the same publisher. In the good decade between 1954 and 1967 Fanthorpe developed an astonishing productivity. Under various pseudonyms, partly personal, partly publishing pseudonyms such as Victor La Salle, John E. Muller and Karl Zeigfreid, Fanthorpe wrote a large part of the Supernatural tales and science fiction published in Badger Books , a total of well over 100 novels and countless short stories. At times, a 45,000-word novel was published every 12 days, at a flat rate of £ 22.50, with Fanthorpe dictating his texts on tape and then having them transcribed by friends and family. After a quick correction, the text was then sent to the publisher. The production method caused frequent careless mistakes, inconsistencies and gaps in the plot, and the story often ended abruptly because he did not have a precise overview of the volume of the produced text while dictating. Despite such shortcomings, it is acknowledged that his products often need not fear comparison with the works of other prolific writers. In particular, some stories from the series about Val Stearman, an adventurer in the style of Bulldog Drummond , and the mysterious Immortal La Noire are considered highlights of Fanthorpe's work.

The large number of pseudonyms used also contributed to the fact that so-called magazine volumes were often published in the Badger Books series, i.e. collections of stories allegedly by different authors. In fact, all or most of the stories in such a volume came from Fanthorpe under various pseudonyms.

In 1957 he married Patricia Alice Tooke, with whom he has two daughters (born in 1964 and 1966). Together with his wife he published from the early 1980s, a series of non-fiction books on history mystery as to Templar legend and Rennes-le-Château , as well as on issues of anomalistics and cryptozoology . As an expert on such topics, he appeared on television several times, in particular as a presenter and author in the British television series Fortean TV (1997) and Forbidden History (2013-2016).
