A. Bertram Chandler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arthur Bertram Chandler (born March 28, 1912 in Aldershot ; died June 6, 1984 in Sydney ) was an Australian science fiction writer.

Life

Chandler was born in Aldershot, England. His father Arthur Robert Chandler died as a soldier in World War I. His mother, Ida Florence, nee Calver, was a domestic servant. After visiting the Sir John Leman School in Beccles , Suffolk , he acquired the Sir John Cass Technical Institute , a London Nautical School , a certificate (patent) for Great ride ( Certificate of Competency as Master of a Foreign-Going Steamship ). In 1928, at the age of 16, he went to the merchant navy , signed up for Sun Shipping and in the following years went mainly on trampers in the Indian Ocean . In 1937 he moved to the Shaw Savill Line , ran a liner service between Great Britain and Australia and New Zealand and became first mate there . During the Second World War he took part in the convoy trips to England. In 1956 he went to Australia, where he was naturalized , worked for the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand , eventually became a captain and retired in 1974.

Chandler's writing career began with a visit to John W. Campbell in New York, who invited him to write for his science fiction magazine Astounding . Then in May 1944 there Chandlers first short story appeared in "This Means War" . In the nearly two decades that followed, he published dozens of short stories in Astounding and other magazines. Giant Killer ( Astounding , October 1945), in which mutated giant rats attempt to take over an interstellar grain transporter, is considered to be his best story from this time . In 1996 Giant Killer was nominated for the Retro Hugo Award .

Chandler's best-known work, however, is undoubtedly the Rim World cycle , published from 1961 , with three dozen books and numerous short stories one of the most extensive series by a single author in science fiction literature. The Rim Worlds are a group of the edge of the galaxy ( galactic rim lying) on the border worlds starless intergalactic void. In this cycle, which is several centuries in the future, spaceships equipped with super-light propulsion operate a lively trade between the border worlds, which offer fertile breeding ground for dramatic space opera in terms of lawlessness and exoticism . The main character is John Grimes, who eventually rises to the rank of captain and commodore of the edge worlds in the interstellar merchant marine and experiences numerous adventures in the process, much like the character of the sea hero Horatio Hornblower in the novels by CS Forester . Chandler himself admitted that Hornblower was a role model for Grimes.

The Rim World cycle is not a series of novels in the strict sense of the word, insofar as there is no defined order and John Grimes is not always the protagonist. In the first novels of the cycle, it was not Grimes but Derek Calver who was the main character. The Rim World novels also have subgroups such as the three novels about the Empress of the Galaxy ( Empress of Outer Space , Space Mercenaries and Nebula Alert ). Some of Chandler's novels only have points of contact with the Rim World universe, so that the Rim World cycle can actually be seen as a group of works with a fictional world as a bracket. In 1974, Chandler sketched the following approximate chronology of the Rim World novels about John Grimes:

  • The Road to the Rim (1967)
  • To Prime the Pump (1971)
  • The Hard Way Up (1972)
  • Spartan Planet / False Fatherhood (1968)
  • The Inheritors (1972)
  • The Broken Cycle (1975)
  • The Big Black Mark (1975)
  • Catch the Star Winds (1969)
  • Into the Alternate Universe (1964)
  • Contraband from Otherspace (1967)
  • The Rim Gods (1969)
  • Alternate Orbits (1971)
  • Nebula Alert (1967)
  • The Gateway to Never (1972)
  • The Dark Dimensions (1971)
  • The Way Back (released 1976)

Chandler also wrote a number of novels outside of Rim Worlds after 1960 , including Kelly Country (1983), published in German as The Australian Revolution , an alternate history novel in which he had Ned Kelly lead a successful uprising against the British. His US editor Donald A. Wollheim considered this novel to be Chandler's best book ever.

Chandler's work includes over 40 novels and 200 short stories. He received the Ditmar Award in the Australian Science Fiction category in 1969, 1971, 1974 and 1976 . In 1976 he won the Japanese Seiun Award with his short story Wet Paint .

Chandler's first marriage was to Joan Margaret Barnard. In 1961 he married Susan Constance Schlenker for the second time. He had three children. His daughter Jenny is married to the British horror writer John Ramsey Campbell .
