Shaw, Savill & Albion Steamship Company
Shaw, Savill & Albion Steamship Co. Ltd. ( SS&A ) was a British shipping company headquartered in London . The company operated liner services from Great Britain to Australia and New Zealand . SS&A has been the White Star Line's partner in Australia for many years .
history
The origins of the company go back to the companies Shaw, Savill & Co (founded 1858) and Albion Line (founded 1856), both pure sailing ship shipping companies with liner services to Australia and New Zealand, as well as John Leslie & Partners in Aberdeen. In 1882 both shipping companies merged to form Shaw, Savill & Albion SS Co. Ltd. ( SS&A ) to maintain a joint liner service now operated by steamers via Cape Town to Australia and back via South America. The ships could be recognized by an ocher-colored funnel with a black cap.
The connection ran from London - Plymouth - Cape Town - Hobart - Wellington - Napier - Lyttelton - Montevideo - Rio de Janeiro - London, since 1904 Glasgow could also be the starting port of this route, but without the South America part. In 1884, SS&A opened the Liverpool / London - Cape Town - Melbourne - Sydney connection in conjunction with the White Star Line ; this collaboration was to last until 1933. In 1916 the Panama Canal was added to the shipping company's route network.
In 1928, SS&A and White Star take joint control of the Australian Commonwealth Government Line and merge it with the Aberdeen Line , which was taken over in 1905, to form the Aberdeen Commonwealth Line . In the wake of the Great Depression , the White Star Line went bankrupt, and SS&A took over the previously jointly operated service and some ships, as well as control of the Aberdeen Commonwealth Line . The naming of the ships of Shaw, Savill & Albion has now changed a little, as a final homage to the collaboration with the White-Star, some names of SS & A ships now ended with ic . Until then, all of the shipping company's ships were named after islands and locations in Australia and Oceania .
In 1933 the shipping giant Furness, Withy & Co. took over the majority of shares in SS&A . The shipping company was integrated into the Furness, Withy empire, but still retained extensive independence. During the Second World War , some ships were sunk, the loss of the Ceramic was the most serious, 656 people were killed. After the end of the war, the expansion of the fleet continued.
With the Southern Cross , which came into service in 1955 , a promising design was realized. The machinery was located in the stern area, and with it the chimney. This concept is still a model for cargo ships to this day . In addition to the scheduled service, the Southern Cross was also planned for cruises. In 1957, the Aberdeen Commonwealth Line, which had been in operation until then, was ended with the decommissioning of its last ships, Largs Bay and Moreton Bay .
Due to the major changes in shipping, brought about by airplanes and containers , SS&A also got into economic difficulties. While most of the companies bought by Furness, Withy & Co. have now lost their identity, SS&A was initially retained. In the 1970s, passenger services were discontinued, but container services were expanded and operated until the mid-1980s. In 1987 Shaw, Savill & Albion came to an end , and the shipping company ceased to exist.
Since 1992 the naming rights to SS&A , as well as the entire Furness, Withy Group, belong to the German shipping company Hamburg Süd . A revival of this great name is out of the question.
