Blue Star Line
The Blue Star Line ( BSL ) was a British shipping company headquartered in London , which operated a very successful liner service to South America . The shipping services were expanded over time to Australia , North America and East Asia . The company was one of the pioneers in the business of shipping frozen products with reefer ships and reefer containers.
history
Sir Derek Vestey, later Baron, opened one of the first shops for frozen products, primarily meat and vegetables, in London in 1895 . In this area of the food industry, the Vesteys are among the pioneers and the company traded as Vestey Bros. & Co. Ltd. In Argentina , Brazil and Venezuela , cattle farms were built in quick succession, and later sugar plantations etc. Ä. added. The meat was processed into finished products on the spot. In 1897 the first cold stores were built in Buenos Aires , these business activities were combined in the United Cold Storage Company . The meat produced in South America was then shipped to Europe . From then on it was not far to the idea of doing it with our own ships.
Foundation of Blue Star Line (1909)
In 1909 Vestey bought its first own cargo ship with extensive cooling facilities and in 1911 the Blue Star Line was founded. The task of the newly founded Blue Star Line was initially to ship frozen meat from South America to Europe. The parent company of BSL was the United Cold Storage Company and its parent holding was the Vestey Group Plc . The sign of the shipping company was a blue star on a white background and the chimneys were red with a central white circle with a blue star in the middle, the cap was black with a narrow white band in the lower part. The ship names all started with B (e.g. Brodstone), in 1920 this was changed: The ships were all named after countries or cities and at the end there was always Star (e.g. Australia Star or Tacoma Star ).
The route ran from London - Southampton - Lisbon - ( Tenerife / Las Palmas ) - Rio de Janeiro - Santos - Montevideo and Buenos Aires . In 1911 the service to East Asia was opened via the Suez Canal . In 1920 the transpacific service to the US pacific ports ( Los Angeles , San Francisco to Vancouver ) was opened over the Panama Canal . From 1933 Australia and New Zealand and from 1935 South Africa were added to the route network. The ships of the shipping company were mostly freighters with large freezer facilities, which also applied to the passenger ships built later. Later on, pure cargo ships also joined the fleet. All freighters (including the container ships) had one thing in common: They were also well equipped for the transport of passengers .
The company did great and was successful in business from the start. The first passenger ships entered the fleet from the mid-1920s. The A-class ships built between 1926/27 - Almeda Star (I), Andalucia Star (I), Arandora Star , Avila Star (I), and Avelona Star (I) - with 14,000 GRT were medium-sized ships for South America. Service. There was a lot of traffic on this route, shipping companies from all over the world had specialized in this service; so the Royal Mail Line , Lamport & Holt , Booth Line , Hamburg-Süd , Chargeurs Reunis , Cie. de Nav. Sudatlantique and much more. The Blue Star Line was able to hold its own very well and took one of the top places. Freight shipping was the main pillar of the shipping company. In 1935, the Blue Star Line took over the bankrupt Leyland Line and expanded the company into a subsidiary, for which some Blue Star ships were also registered. In the 1930s there was strong expansion, but the Second World War , which soon broke out, meant terrible ship losses for the BSL. In 1944 and 1946 respectively, the shipping companies Lamport & Holt and Booth Line , which were successful but got into economic difficulties due to the war, were bought. At the end of the war, they resolutely started to rebuild the fleet and were soon back in their old positions.
In 1952 the Blue Star Line opened a service from Australia to East Asia ( Singapore , Indonesia , Malaysia ) under the name Austasia Line . In 1957, the BSL, together with the New Zealand Shipping Co. and Shaw, Savill & Albion Line, founded a joint venture called the Crusader Shipping Company . In the mid- 1960s , major changes began to take place in shipping, especially the container . The Blue Star Line correctly recognized the trend and commissioned the first container ships as early as 1965 , which began service in 1967 as the New Zealand Star and Southland Star . The shipping company remained loyal to the original business and put special refrigerated ships into service. In 1972 all liner services were discontinued and the Blue Star Line had become a container shipping company. In 1975 the name of the shipping company changed to Blue Star Ship Management Ltd.
Blue Star Ship Management Ltd. (1972)
In 1971, BSL founded the shipping company Associated Container Transportation ( ACT ) in collaboration with P&O and other partners . ACT was operated until 1991 and then dissolved, the two partners took over the ships they brought in and in the same year the two subsidiaries Lamport & Holt and Booth Line were discontinued.
Sale at P&O (1998)
In 1998 the Vestey family sold the Blue Star Line container service to P&O . The reefer ships continued to operate under the Albion Reefers label until 2001 and then sold. The Vestey Group Plc today is still operating successfully in their original business, but since 2001 no shipping activities consist more. The Blue Star Line continued to exist under P&O direction, but as a shipping company without its own ships.
New establishment in Hamburg and merger with Maersk (2002)
In 2002 the shipping company Blue Star GmbH was re-established in Hamburg. In 2005, P & O Nedlloyd was merged with the AP Moeller Maersk Group, resulting in the Blue Star GmbH shipping company becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of the Maersk Group. Due to the focus on the core business carried out in 2008, Maersk decided to sell Blue Star.
Takeover by Komrowski Befrachtungskontor (2009)
In 2009 Komrowski Befrachtungskontor KG took over the 34 container ships of the Blue Star fleet. This increases the Komrowski fleet to a total of 52 ships, mainly container ships , with a total capacity of around 190,000 TEU slots.
On December 14, 2011, ER Schiffahrt announced that it wanted to merge with its competitor Komrowski to form a new shipping company called Blue Star Holding . This would create the largest German shipping group with more than 160 ships. The majority of the capital in this new shipping company would be held by ER Capital, the holding company of the ER Schiffahrt Group.
Other shipping companies with these names
In 2004 Blue Star Line A / S was founded in Faaborg .
In 2012, Clive Palmer announced the founding of Blue Star Line Pty Ltd , which was to create a replica of the RMS Titanic .
