CMA CGM is a French shipping and logistics company based in Marseille .

history

The French shipping company CMA CGM was formed in 1999 from the merger of the shipping companies Compagnie Générale Maritime (CGM), also known as French Line , and the Compagnie Maritime d'Affrètement (French chartering, ship hire) (CMA), founded in 1978 by Jacques R. Saadé . CMA CGM is the largest shipping company in France . It operates almost 400 of its own and chartered container ships , making it currently the third largest container ship shipping company in the world. Since the end of 2012, the company has been operating the CMA CGM Marco Polo with a slot capacity of over 16,000  TEU , which was the largest container ship in the world until the Triple E class was commissioned.

In addition to global container transport , the company also offers other logistics services through subsidiaries.

In the planned P3 alliance , the company wanted to merge with number 2 and number 1 on the market, the Swiss shipping company MSC and the Danish shipping company Maersk . The merger was approved by the US competition authorities, but not by China. The cooperation is therefore considered to have failed. Instead, an alliance called "Ocean Three" was agreed in September 2014 with the number 6 and number 18 on the market, the Chinese shipping company China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) and the Arab shipping company United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) together the routes from Asia to Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, the US west and east coast and the US Gulf.

In November 2014 a contract was signed that provides for the takeover of the Hamburg shortsea shipping company OPDR from the German Schulte Group .

In mid-2016, CMA CGM acquired the majority of shares in Neptune Orient Lines from Singapore from Temasek .

In November 2016 the "Ocean Alliance" was founded with China COSCO Shipping Corporation , Orient Overseas Container Line and Evergreen Marine .

In August 2017, the largest container ships with 22,000 TEU were ordered from Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding . The ships should have an LNG drive .

In early 2018, CMA CGM merged its two subsidiaries MacAndrews and OPDR.

Branches

In Germany, CMA CGM has offices in Bremen , Düsseldorf , Munich and Neu-Isenburg (near Frankfurt am Main ) as well as agencies in Hamburg and Leinfelden-Echterdingen (near Stuttgart ). There are around 600 branches worldwide, around 60 of which are in the People's Republic of China and 20 in the USA .

In the years 2006-2010, the company had a 145 meter high office tower with 33 floors built in Marseille . The glass and steel construction based on plans by the architect Zaha Hadid is flanked by further low-rise buildings in the base area. Around 2,700 employees of the shipping company work in the building. The high-rise, named “ Tour CMA CGM ”, was awarded the bronze Emporis Skyscraper Award in 2010 .
