The United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) was an Arab shipping company . After more than 40 years, it merged with Hapag-Lloyd AG on May 24, 2017 .
history
The UASC was founded in July 1976 at the instigation of Kuwait together with the states of Bahrain , Iraq , Qatar , Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates . Kuwait brought its state-owned shipping company Kuwait Shipping Company, founded in 1965, including its fleet of 26 ships into the company; the remaining states contributed a further 20 ships. The Kuwait Shipping Company operated a large number of units of the Bezhitsa class and had ordered numerous general cargo ships of the Kuwait class before the merger . Together with reorders of other ships of this type, this series formed the backbone of the UASC for a long time.
The services of the UASC were quickly expanded into a route network with a growing shipping fleet. At the beginning of the 1980s, the shipping company commissioned the nine full container ships in the Dubai class , which took into account the progressive containerization of liner shipping. In later years the shipping company expanded its services, particularly to the ports of the United States , Europe and Asia . Before it merged with Hapag-Lloyd, UASC was one of the twenty largest container liner shipping companies in the world.
In September 2014, an alliance was forged with the Chinese shipping company CSCL (China Shipping Container Lines), No. 6 worldwide among container lines, and the French shipping company CMA CGM , No. 3 worldwide among container lines. The routes Asia – Europe, Asia – Mediterranean, Asia – USA west coast, Asia – USA east coast and Gulf of Mexico are now jointly operated under the name “Ocean Three”.
On April 21, 2016, it was announced that UASC and Hapag-Lloyd were holding talks to merge their container shipping activities. Accordingly, Hapag-Lloyd should take over the entire fleet of UASC, whereas UASC should become the largest shareholder in Hapag-Lloyd with 28%. On July 18, 2016, this was officially confirmed on the UASC website. The merger was completed in May 2017.
