The Kuwait-class , K-class or Govan-class was a class of general cargo ships for liner shipping .

history

The ship type was developed at the beginning of the 1970s at the Govan Shipbuilders shipyard group in Glasgow , which only emerged from the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders in 1972 . The development and construction was commissioned by the Kuwait Shipping Company, from which the United Arab Shipping Company emerged in 1976 . The basic design of the Kuwait class was a liner , which was designed with a view to versatile use in the shipping areas of the Middle East . The ships had aft bridge superstructures and five holds, the hatches of which were divided in the middle by a longitudinal hull . The hatches were closed by MacGregor hatch covers.

The series of the ship type consisted of over 40 units, which were built in several lots by three shipyards - about 20 ships came from Scotland, over 20 other licensed buildings from Korea. The first construction lot with six units was built from 1974 to 1975 at the Govan Shipbuilders shipyard. The loading gear of these six ships consisted of several rotating ship cranes, two of which were in Gemini design, i.e. rotating double cranes, and a swiveling 105-ton telescopic boom for heavy goods and project cargoes arranged relatively far forward . In 1976 and 1977 a second construction lot followed with six ships, three of which were built directly by Govan Shipbuilders and another three by their subsidiary Scotstoun Marine. These six ships were equipped with an additional movable slewing crane instead of the crockery. 1976 began the license production of the ship type at the Korean shipbuilding group Hyundai Shipbuilding & Heavy Industries (from 1978 Hyundai Heavy Industries ). The licensed buildings made in Korea from 1976 to 1978 (over 20 units) all had the Stülcken heavy lift crockery. In 1977 three more ships with cantilever booms from Scotstoun Marine followed and Govan Shipbuilders also delivered another four ships in 1977 and 1978, which were also provided with cuspidors.

The ship propulsion consisted of a six-cylinder two- stroke diesel engine of the type Burmeister & Wain 6K74EF, which was built under license by the two mechanical engineering companies John G. Kincaid & Company and Harland & Wolff . The main engines of all ships built in Korea were, without exception, supplied by Kincaid and Harland & Wolff, as no corresponding machine production took place in Korea at that time.

It is noteworthy that almost all ships remained with their original client for their entire service life. Although the majority of the units have meanwhile been chartered out to other shipping companies and temporarily renamed, the majority were sold for demolition under the original name in the years from 2000 to 2003 by UASC. In 2012 one last ship was still in service, the Dong Ming 6 , built in 1977 as Ibn Bajjah by Govan Shipbuilders , now largely without loading gear, used in Chinese coastal traffic.
