Govan Shipbuilders Ltd was a British shipbuilding company on the River Clyde in Glasgow , Scotland .

history

The company was formed in 1972 through the acquisition and incorporation of the Clyde shipyards Fairfield Shipbuilders , Alexander Stephen and Sons , Charles Connell & Company , Yarrow Shipbuilders and John Brown & Company into the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders group of shipyards .

The former Charles Connell & Company shipyard operated under the name Scotstoun Marine Ltd, as a subsidiary of Govan Shipbuilders, between 1973 and 1980.

On July 1, 1977, Govan Shipbuilders was incorporated into the state-owned British Shipbuilders Corporation . Between 1973 and 1988 a total of 53 ships were completed by Govan Shipbuilders on the site of the former Fairfield Shipbuilders . In 1988, the sale took place at the Kvaerner Group and the re-privatization under the name Kvaerner Govan Ltd . BAE Systems was born when Kvaerner Govan Ltd was sold to British Aerospace in 1999 . Marconi Marine (YSL) became BAE Systems Marine (YSL) . From 2008 the traditional Yarrows shipyard will be operated as part of BVT Surface Fleet , a joint venture between BAE Systems and the VT Group , formerly Vosper Thornycroft .

Govan Shipbuilders and Scotstoun Marine mainly built two types of ships in large numbers, Cardiff-class bulk carriers and Kuwait-class general cargo ships .
