VT Group was a shipbuilding company based in Portsmouth and Southampton .

history

View of the shipyard in Woolston

The company was founded in 1966 as Vosper Thornycroft through the merger of the Vosper & Co. shipyard in Portsmouth on the Solent with the Woolston, Southampton-based shipyard John I. Thornycroft & Co. The former Vosper shipyard was known for its boat building , while Thornycroft for the construction of destroyers and other larger ship units.

The development of hovercraft began and in 1968 the 75-ton ship type “Hovercraft VT1” was presented, which reached top speeds of 40 knots.

On July 1, 1977, the shipyard group was incorporated into the state-owned British Shipbuilders Corporation . After a management buy-out in 1985, the company was re-privatized under the old name ( Margaret Thatcher , British Prime Minister from May 1979 to November 1990, privatized numerous state-owned companies).

Vosper Thornycroft managed to survive even in bad economic times until 2010. They did not rely solely on the changeable market in warship construction, but also diversified into related industries.

From 2002 Vosper Thornycroft operated as the VT Group .

In 2010, the VT Group was taken over by Babcock and dissolved.
