Peñalosa Ensemble, 2013

The Peñalosa-Ensemble is a vocal ensemble whose members live in Germany and Switzerland. It was founded in 1996 and has specialized primarily in the interpretation of a cappella music from the Renaissance to the early Baroque ; In recent years the formation has also turned to the music of the Romantic era and the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. The name of the ensemble is derived from the important Spanish Renaissance singer and composer Francisco de Peñalosa (approx. 1470-1528).

The Peñalosa-Ensemble was founded in 1996 by Susan Eitrich ( soprano ), Sebastian Mory ( alto ), Andreas Puttkammer ( tenor ) and Pierre Funck ( bass ). In 1996 and 1998 it took part in master classes with the Hilliard Ensemble . In July 2001 it won first prize in the vocal ensemble category at the 40th Cesare Augusto Seghizzi International Choir and Vocal Ensemble Competition in Gorizia , Italy, as well as a special prize for the best interpretation of a polyphonic sacred work. At the 38th competition for choirs and ensembles in Tolosa ( 38 Tolosako Abesbatza Lehiaketa ) in 2006, it won 2nd prize in the sacred music category .

The ensemble appears at renowned festivals in Germany and other European countries and can already look back on a number of CD publications, which have also been praised in specialist publications. Since 2007, the vocal ensemble has held an annual summer course for a cappella ensembles in Urach Abbey . In 2008, 2010 and 2012 the ensemble organized the Reutlingen Renaissance Festival in Reutlingen ; In November 2012, among other things, the first fully preserved opera in music history was performed, Rappresentatione di Anima, et di Corpo by Emilio de 'Cavalieri , and the only (unfortunately not completely) preserved real 12-part (and not three-part) mass of the early Renaissance , Et ecce terrae motus by Antoine Brumel from 1510.

Of the founding members, Susan Eitrich (soprano) and Sebastian Mory (altus / tenor) are still active in the Peñalosa ensemble. Since 2017 the 4-part basic line-up of the ensemble has consisted of Susan Eitrich (S), Gudrun Köllner (A), Sebastian Mory (T), Dietrich Wrase (B). Depending on the program, other singers will also take part, possibly also instrumentalists such as Andrea Baur and Thorsten Bleich ( lute instruments ), Szilárd Chereji ( Viella ) and Michael Metzler (historical percussion ).
