Emilio de 'Cavalieri (* 1550 in Rome ; † March 11, 1602 ibid) was an Italian composer , organist , diplomat , choreographer and dancer at the end of the Renaissance era .

Life

Emilio de 'Cavalieri was born in Rome to an aristocratic and musical family. Presumably he received his first musical lessons there and worked there as organist and music director from 1578 to 1584. In 1588 he moved to Florence because Ferdinando I de 'Medici had appointed him as a musician and craftsman. He contributed to the development of the Intermezzi and worked in this area with Giovanni de 'Bardi . Presumably, Cavalieri was influenced by Bardi. Several sentences of the intermedia for La pellegrina listed in Florence in 1589 on the occasion of the marriage of Ferdinando I de 'Medici to Christine von Lorraine are from Cavalieri. In the 1590s, while still in Florence, Cavalieri composed several pastoral operas . In addition to his musical offices, Cavalieri worked as a diplomat.

Works

His work, together with that of other composers from Venice , Rome and Florence, marked the beginning of the early Baroque period with monody and figured bass . As a member of the Roman School , he was one of the founders of Monodie and wrote the Rappresentatione di Anima, et di Corpo , the first opera to be completely preserved .

  • Rappresentatione di anima, et di corpo , sacred opera, first performance in 1600
