Orlando Gibbons

Orlando Gibbons (baptized December 25, 1583 in Oxford , † June 5, 1625 in Canterbury ) was an English composer of the Renaissance .

Orlando Gibbons comes from a family of musicians, his father William (around 1540–1595), his brothers Edward (1568–1650) and Ellis Gibbons (1573–1603) and his son Christopher are still well-known composers today. Orlando Gibbons was a singer at King's College , Cambridge from 1590 to 1599 . In 1614 he became organist in the chapel of the new King Jacob I and stayed there until his death. In 1623 he received the degree of Doctor of Music in Cambridge, a year later he took over the post of organist at Westminster Abbey in London.

Orlando Gibbons is one of the most important English composers of the 17th century. In his day he was mainly celebrated as a performing musician, his fame is mainly due to his anthems and services . Of his secular works, besides The Cries of London , the madrigal The silver swan deserves a mention.

Instrumental works

In addition to ecclesiastical and secular vocal compositions and piano music, Gibbons became famous primarily for his works for viol consort - a total of 42 works have survived, published in volume 48 of the Musica Britannica and given numbers:

  • MB 1–6: Six Fantasias for two treble viols.
  • MB 7–15: Fantasies of Three Parts : Collection of four trios for treble, alto and bass viol and five trios for two treble and one bass viol, probably with an organ. Printed in 1621 and 1648.
  • MB 16–22: Fantasies with the Great Dooble Bass : Seven trios for treble, bass and double bass viol , probably with organ.
  • MB 23: Gaillarde for treble, bass and double bass viol.
  • MB 24–25: Two Fantasies for four viols (treble, alto, bass and double bass).
  • MB 26: In Nomines for two treble, one alto and one bass viol
  • MB 27–29: Three in nomines for five viols
  • MB 30: Pavane has survived incompletely, probably for five viols
  • MB 31–39: Nine Fantasias for six viols
  • MB 40: Variations on the popular folk song Go from my Window
  • MB 41–42: Pavane and Galliarde for six viols
