Benedictus Ducis
Benedictus Ducis (* around 1492 in Konstanz , † late 1544 near Ulm ) was a German composer and Protestant pastor .
Life
Ducis was organist in Antwerp , probably in London from 1515 .
As a supporter of the Reformation , he became a Protestant pastor in Geislingen an der Steige and in 1532 at the hospital in Ulm. From 1533 to 1535 he was in charge of the Ulm parish in Stubersheim , and from 1535 until his death in 1544 he was in charge of the Protestant parish in Schalkstetten . He kept in close contact with the church and cultural life of Ulm throughout his life. Many kinds of deficits in his administration and personal weaknesses are handed down in the source. "He was very devoted to domestic drink" and "neglected his branch community" ( Waldhausen (Geislingen) ). He was considered to be an irascible character who did not shy away from beating women (he “beats his wife, so she complains to the neighbor”). Nevertheless, he was known as a humanist.
He composed voluminous Catholic church music as well as simple chorales in line with the Lutheran idea. His style is based more on Heinrich Isaac and Sixt Dietrich than on Josquin Desprez .
confusion
Benedictus Ducis was at times confused with Benedictus Appenzeller . Appenzeller only marked many of his works with “Benedictus”. Therefore, for a long time there was confusion with the contemporary German composer Benedictus Ducis. Only the musicologists Barclay Squire (1911/12) and D. Bartha (1930) were able to clearly prove two identities of composers, namely on the basis of the style, the composed genres and the tradition, also on the basis of the fact that Appenzell was a Catholic and Ducis Protestant.
