Schalkstetten is a suburb of the municipality of Amstetten in the Alb-Donau district in Baden-Württemberg .

history

Schalkstetten, center of the village

The first evidence of use of the later district of Schalkstetten comes from the Neolithic Age. A first settlement is known for the Celtic period (Latène period) and the Roman period. Archaeological settlement finds from the early and high Middle Ages were discovered during construction work on the southern outskirts. The oldest post-Roman finds date from the Migration Period, so they are older than the place name, the ending of -stetten probably going back to the late Merovingian period.

Remains of a medieval Landwehr, probably the imperial city of Ulm, have been preserved on the northern outskirts. Schalkstetten was first mentioned in a document - together with Amstetten - in 1275. In 1396 it came into the possession of Ulm. Schalkstetten came to Bavaria in 1803 and to Württemberg in 1810 to the Oberamt Geislingen and with this in 1938 to the district of Ulm .

The place on the Stubersheimer Alb is still dominated by agriculture today. Schalkstetten today has 353 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2006).

In the center of the village is the local museum of the traditional association with exhibits that bring us closer to the domestic and agricultural life of our grandparents and great-grandparents. The museum is always open in the afternoons on the days when the Ulm Railway Friends' steam locomotive is running.

On January 1, 1975, Schalkstetten was incorporated into Amstetten. In Schalkstetten, a locality within the meaning of the Baden-Württemberg municipal code with its own local council and local mayor has been set up on the territory of the former municipality . It only includes the village of Schalkstetten.
