Amstetten is a municipality in the Alb-Donau district in Baden-Württemberg ( Germany ).
geography
Geographical location
Amstetten is located in the northern Swabian Alb at the head of the Geislinger Steige , about 25 kilometers northwest of Ulm . Here an ancient trade route from the Filstal crosses the Alb.
Neighboring communities
The community borders in the north on the city of Geislingen an der Steige in the district of Göppingen , in the east on Gerstetten in the district of Heidenheim , Altheim (Alb) and Weidenstetten , in the south on Lonsee and in the west on Nellingen .
Community structure
The districts of Bräunisheim , Hofstett-Emerbuch, Reutti , Schalkstetten and Stubersheim belong to the municipality of Amstetten . The place Amstetten itself is divided into the old Amstetten village and the Amstetten train station, which was newly built after the railway was built .
history
Traces of a Roman road station at the head of the Geislinger Steige attest to the important geographical location. While Amstetten itself lacks traces of early medieval settlement, finds from the districts of Schalkstetten, Bräunisheim and Stubersheim show settlement at least since the Merovingian period . The first documentary mention of Amstetten comes from the year 1275 in the Liber decimationis , the tithe book of the diocese of Constance . In the late Middle Ages, the region mainly belonged to the Counts of Helfenstein , who, however, had to pledge their property to the imperial city of Ulm at the end of the 14th century. In 1803 Amstetten, together with Ulm, first fell to the Electorate of Bavaria , then finally to the Kingdom of Württemberg in 1810 and was assigned to the Oberamt Geislingen . In 1850, Amstetten was connected to the railway network of the Württemberg railway with the continuation of the Eastern Railway to Ulm . In 1938 Amstetten came to the district of Ulm as part of a regional reform in Württemberg during the Nazi era . In 1945 the place became part of the American zone of occupation and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which was incorporated into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952. Since the district reform that took place in 1973, Amstetten has been part of the newly formed Alb-Danube district.

mayor

coat of arms
The coat of arms shows a black shepherd's shovel on a silver (white) background , which is covered with a silver (white) five-spoke wheel. The municipality flag corresponds to this coat of arms in black and white. The coat of arms and flag were awarded in 1958.
The colors of the coat of arms are reminiscent of the city of Ulm, to which Amstetten once belonged. The shepherd's shovel is a reminder of the sheep farming that was once widespread in this area, and the five-spoke wheel, a symbol of traffic and industry, reminds of the train station, to which Amstetten owes its economic development.

Amstetten has had a partnership with Celles-sur-Belle in France since 1989.

Rail transport
The Stuttgart – Ulm– Munich line ( Filstalbahn ) runs through the community. The Amstetten train station used to be important due to the connection of two secondary lines and its location at the head of the Geislinger Steige .
Today two museum railways still run on the branch lines at times. The local railway Amstetten – Gerstetten (gauge 1435 mm) runs on a 20 km long route to Gerstetten . The Albbähnle to Oppingen (gauge 1000 mm) runs on a section of the former railway line to Laichingen . After it was shut down in 1985, it was possible to prevent the six-kilometer route between Amstetten and Oppingen from being dismantled.
Sports
The SV Amstetten 1946 eV is the local sports club with the divisions football, tennis, handball and gymnastics. It maintains two large sports fields, a clubhouse and a tennis hall with outdoor facilities.
