geography

Geographical location

Balzheim is around 25 kilometers south of Ulm . The municipality is located in the Illertal and on the Iller , but has only a few hundred meters of the river bank, as the border between Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria follows the course of the river before the regulation.

Neighboring communities

The community borders on the city of Dietenheim in the north, the districts of Herrenstetten and Untereichen in the Bavarian municipality of Altenstadt in the east, Kirchberg an der Iller and Gutenzell-Hürbel in the south and Wain in the west , all three in the Biberach district .

structure

The municipality consists of the two parts of the municipality, Unterbalzheim, to which, in addition to the village of Unterbalzheim, the farms Halbertshof and Mühle belong, and Oberbalzheim with only the village of Oberbalzheim.

history

middle Ages

Balzheim was first mentioned on June 2, 1087. The name is probably of older pagan origin and is said to go back to Baldur , the Germanic god of light.

In 1372 Ludwig Krafft bought the dominion of Balzheim from the Swabian noble family Freiberg . Later, Ober- as well as Unterbalzheim belonged to the Counts of Grüningen-Landau. Through sale and subsequent inheritance, the rule came to the Counts of Kirchberg , who sold it in 1490 to Walter Ehinger, the family of Ludwig Krafft's wife, who built a castle here until 1504.

Modern times

In the middle of the 17th century Protestant religious refugees from Carinthia , Austria , settled in Balzheim.

After the Ehinger von Balzheim went out in 1734, in 1740 Franz Gottlieb von Palm (1691–1749), who came from Esslingen am Neckar and worked as a banker in Vienna , acquired the Ober- and Unterbalzheim , Bodelshofen and Steinbach estates . In Esslingen he also had the Oberer Palmschen Bau built, today's New Town Hall .

In 1954 the municipality of Oberbalzheim inherited a sum of 1.4 million DM from the formerly resident Imre Karl Michael Julius Freiherrn von Palm (1884-1949). To make this possible, a comparison was made between the von Palm and family in 1953 come to the community of Oberbalzheim. In 1972 the "Oberbalzheim Foundation - Imre Freiherr von Palm'sche Foundation" was established and it was ensured that the income from the foundation only benefits the people living in Oberbalzheim and is not used for the legal tasks of the community.

Today's municipality of Balzheim was created on July 1, 1974 through the merger of the two then independent municipalities of Unterbalzheim and Oberbalzheim, which before 1972 had belonged to the Biberach district.
