Asselfingen is a municipality in the eastern Alb-Donau district in Baden-Württemberg .
geography
Geographical location
The municipality of Asselfingen is located on a ridge south of the Lone Valley and on the northern edge of the Swabian Donaumoos , around 20 kilometers northeast of Ulm . This makes it the easternmost municipality in the Alb-Danube district. Their only place is the village of Asselfingen, which lies in the not very deep hollow of the Grabbach , which drains southeast to the Danube via a series of ditches, most of which already run across the border in Bavaria .
Neighboring communities
The municipality is bordered to the north by the district of Bissingen the city Herbrechtingen , to the east by the city Niederstotzingen , both in the district of Heidenheim , to the south to Bayern belonging Swabian town Leipheim and to the west Rammingen .
history
Asselfingen was first mentioned in 1143 in a deed of donation from the Anhausen monastery an der Brenz . In 1504 the place came into the possession of the Free Imperial City of Ulm and therefore became Protestant in the course of the Reformation . 1803 lost the city of Ulm's status as a free city and came with all possessions to Bayern . In 1810 the border between Bavaria and Württemberg was finally regulated by a treaty, and Asselfingen became part of Württemberg.
In 1939 the Lion Man was found in the Hohlenstein-Stadel cave , an ivory figure from the Paleolithic Age , which is considered one of the oldest known human sculptures.
