geography

Lone Pot

Lone pot in Urspring

The Lone rises at about 562  m above sea level. NHN a spring pot in Urspring , a suburb of the municipality of Lonsee . The source pot is 6 m deep and has a diameter of 10 m. This karst spring pours an average of 220 liters per second (min. 4 l / s max. 1840 l / s). Its catchment area extends as far as the eight kilometers to the west of Nellingen . The blue shimmering Lone water pressing to the surface appears clean, but like most karst springs in the Swabian Alb it is heavily polluted with nitrate, germs and other inputs from agriculture. Some trout used by fishermen cavort in it. The Haldenstein cave , about 100 m away, shows signs of a forerunner of the Lone spring.

The source of the Lone is protected under the protected area number 842-50750044 as an extensive natural monument.

course

From Urspring the Lone flows in a south-easterly direction through the places Lonsee, Westerstetten and Breitingen . Shortly after Bernstadt , it swings to the northeast and, after almost 38 km between Hürben and Burgberg , both districts of Giengen an der Brenz , joins the Hürbe , which is only about 2 km long .

Today the Lone is a small body of water in a very wide valley. On large parts of the stretch from Westerstetten to Niederstotzingen (approx. 1.5 km before the confluence with the Hürbe) it is even sometimes dry because its water completely seeps into the karst . Here, only the conspicuous and alpine-typical dry valley remains visible above ground . Most of the water seeping away there comes to light again in the sources of the Nau in Langenau , about 5 km south-east of the Lone middle course .

Partly with the dry valleys typical of the Alb plateau. Since all sub- catchment areas are located on the
karst Swabian Alb, strongly deviating catchment areas in the subterranean rift system are to be expected. Accordingly, the specified water lengths of the tributaries that tend to dry out should rather be viewed as a maximum.

history

The Ur-Lone was an important river in the Tertiary with two main strands, the Tübingen Lone and the Cannstatter Lone. The catchment area of the latter extended as far as the Heilbronn area . The Cannstatter Lone flowed roughly towards the course of today's Neckar Valley below Plochingens , from there further east, following the Filstal and the Steige near Geislingen , to today's Lonebett on the Swabian Alb . The Ur-Lone once followed this direction as far as Upper Swabia, where it flowed into the Tethys , the predecessor of the Mediterranean. It was only the uplift of the Alps and Swabian Alb and the sinking of the Upper Rhine Graben that led to the tapping of the Ur-Lone through the Rhenish Neckar near Plochingen , giving this and its tributary Fils its present-day conspicuously angled course, while the source point of the Lone extends downstream to the Alb plateau there, relocated.

Some prehistoric finds prove an early settlement in the Lone Valley .

Sights and buildings

There are some world-famous caves in the charming landscape of the Lone Valley : The Vogelherd cave and the Hohlenstein barn are sites of approx. 40,000 year old evidence of human activity. The animal figures from the Vogelherd and the mysterious lion man from the Hohlenstein are among the oldest figurative works of art known to man. The Bockstein cave and the foal house are also popular excursion destinations. Since 1999 there have been beavers in the Lonetal again, who have migrated from the Danube via the Brenz and the Hürbe. Beaver castles, dams and the gnawing tracks of the animals can be observed in several places.

The Lone Valley is also attractive for the many cyclists who will find a well-developed network of trails along the banks of the meandering river, which in the lower course usually falls dry from summer until the snow melts .
