About this picture

Gerstetten is a municipality in the district of Heidenheim in Baden-Württemberg .

geography

Gerstetten lies on the Ostalb . Juniper heaths shape the landscape, which was a large coral reef at the time of the early Jurassic Sea.

After Baiersbronn in the Black Forest, Gerstetten is the largest municipality in Baden-Württemberg without municipal rights.

Community structure

The municipality of Gerstetten consists of the districts of Dettingen am Albuch , Gerstetten, Gussenstadt , Heldenfingen, Heuchlingen , Heuchstetten and Sontbergen, which, with the exception of the latter two, were formerly independent municipalities that were incorporated into Gerstetten as part of the municipality reform in the 1970s. The official designation of the districts consists of the prefixed name of the municipality and the name of the respective district placed after it after a hyphen. The municipality of Gerstetten is also divided into the five residential districts of Dettingen am Albuch, Gerstetten, Gussenstadt, Heldenfingen, Heuchlingen (with Heuchstetten and Sontbergen). The districts of Dettingen am Albuch, Gussenstadt, Heldenfingen and Heuchlingen form localities within the meaning of the Baden-Württemberg municipal code with their own local council and mayor .

The municipality of Gerstetten includes 16 separately located villages, hamlets, farms and houses.

The former municipality of Dettingen am Albuch includes the village of Dettingen am Albuch, the Bindstein, Burgholzhöfe and Falkenstein farms and the Ziegelei house as well as the abandoned villages of Burgstall Hürgenstein, Berghof, Ratfelden, Redern and Sillenstetten.

The municipality of Gerstetten in the territorial status of March 31, 1971 includes the village of Gerstetten, the hamlets of Heuchstetten, Heutenburg and Sontbergen (reunification from Bräunisheim to Gerstetten on July 1, 1974) and the farms Erpfenhauser Hof, Mäderhaus and Neuburghof as well as the localities of Emmerstetten, Erpfenhausen , Egelstetten and Steinhaus.

The village of Gussenstadt and the abandoned villages of Berlingen, Goldweiler (Vorderweiler), Hagenhülb, Taubenloch and Wallbach (= Wallbuch) belong to the former municipality of Gussenstadt.

The former municipality of Heldenfingen includes the village of Heldenfingen and the Rüblingerhof farm as well as the abandoned villages of Rüblingen, Meusebrunnen and Gensebrunnen.

The village of Heuchlingen and the defunct village of Jungholz belong to the former municipality of Heuchlingen.

history

Early history

Gerstetten celebrated its 1000th anniversary in 1986 based on the first mention. In fact, due to its name, the place could go back to the late Merovingian period. Formations of names on -stetten are typical of this time. Names in -ingen as in Heuchlingen and Dettingen belong to a name layer that starts a little earlier. The place names contain the names of Gero, Huchilo and Detto, but their importance as the place founder cannot be proven. Relevant Merovingian finds from Gerstetten have not yet become known. References to the finds of a row grave field around 1850 can no longer be verified today because the finds have been lost. The discovery of a coin minted around AD 303 is not to be regarded as reliable evidence of settlement. The sub-towns of Heuchlingen and Dettingen certainly go back to the Merovingian period or even further. Early Halemannic settlement finds are known near Heuchlingen, and there are references to row graves near Dettingen. However, the area has been inhabited since the Neolithic and also has some Roman sites.

High and late Middle Ages

In the Middle Ages, Gerstetten had market rights that corresponded to that of the imperial city of Gmünd . In addition, the residents were free from serfdom. They operated linen weaving and traded in salt. The economic relations extended in particular to the imperial cities of Ulm and Augsburg. Since 1356 Gerstetten belonged to the lordship of Heidenheim and thus came to the Duchy of Württemberg in 1504 . Since then, Gerstetten has been subordinate to the Württemberg office in Heidenheim.

Earlier modern times

In 1536 Duke Ulrich had the Reformation carried out. During the Thirty Years' War, after the lost battle of Nördlingen in 1634, the victorious imperial troops advanced and burned Gerstetten. Protestant refugees from Salzburg and Vorarlberg settled here in the 18th century.

19th century

During the implementation of the new administrative structure in the Kingdom of Württemberg , Gerstetten remained assigned to the Heidenheim Oberamt .

20th century

In 1908, a diesel power plant was founded in Heuchlingen for the Electricity Works Cooperative for the Heidenheimer and Ulmer Albs , with which an electricity supply for the region was created and from which the Central Swabian overland center emerged.

The Protestant Michaelskirche

The administrative reform of April 25, 1938 during the Nazi era in Württemberg led to membership in the Heidenheim district . After the Second World War, the place became part of the American zone of occupation and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which was merged into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.

Religions

The majority of the population is of the Protestant denomination due to its historical affiliation with Old Württemberg .

Incorporations

On July 1, 1974, Sontbergen, until November 30, 1973 a district of Bräunisheim (Alb-Donau district), was reclassified from the neighboring community of Amstetten to Gerstetten.

mayor

In 1994 Roland Polaschek (* 1956) was elected as the new mayor, he was confirmed in office in 2002, 2010 and 2018.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved by the Interior Ministry on April 21, 1975.

Blazon : "In silver over a green mountain of three, a red buzzard soaring upwards."

A seal of the market town from the 17th century shows three ears of barley. After 1922 the seal picture initially showed a "Ger" (spear), which should also refer to the place name. The municipal coat of arms, which was awarded in 1953 together with the green and white flag, also contained the ger, which was affixed to a green leaf on a silver shield. After the incorporation of four places between 1971 and 1974, the municipality dropped this coat of arms. With the Dreiberg, the new one refers to the high-lying community area criss-crossed by ridges and dry valleys, the buzzard to the many birds of prey nesting there. The colors of the coat of arms are those of the Counts of Helfenstein, who played a role in the history of most of the districts.

Community partnerships

Gerstetten has had a partnership with the French municipality of Cébazat in the Auvergne near Clermont-Ferrand since June 27, 1992, and with the Hungarian town of Pilisvörösvár (German: Werischwar ) since May 5, 1996 .

Partnership association

To promote Gerstetten's partnerships in Europe, the founding meeting of the Gerstetten Partnership Association was held on June 1, 2005 in the meeting room of the town hall in Gerstetten. In addition to numerous citizens, many associations in the Gerstetten community became members of the partnership association. The partnership association has been headed by Franz Nerad since it was founded.

TriNa orchestra

In 2011 a series of meetings between young musicians from the cities of Cébazat (France), Gerstetten (Germany) and Pilisvörösvar (Hungary) began to form a European orchestra, the TriNa-Orchester.

The first meeting took place in Germany from April 25th to May 1st, 2011. The conclusion was the concert in the Kliffhalle in Heldenfingen on April 30, 2011.

The musicians met for the second TriNa orchestra from April 8th to 15th in France and concluded with a concert on April 14th, 2012 in the Semaphore in Cébazat.

The third and, for the time being, last meeting of the TriNa Orchestra took place in Hungary from July 20 to 28, 2013. Here, too, there was a concluding concert in the Kulturhaus in Werischwar on July 26, 2013.

After a “Best of TriNa” concert in 2014, at which a specially produced CD was presented, the TriNa orchestra's second season began with the preparation week from July 24th to 30th, 2015. On July 31st, 2015, the final concert took place in the cliff hall in Heldenfingen.

In 2016 the TriNa Orchestra gave a concert in Pilisvörösvar (Hungary).

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

The federal road 466 runs five kilometers north of Gerstetten between Süßen ( B 10 ) and Heidenheim an der Brenz . The road 1165, which leads from Aalen via Gerstetten to Ulm, serves as a feeder. The state road 1164 runs from Geislingen an der Steige through the entire municipality and continues to Herbrechtingen and Heidenheim. From the motorway 7 (junction Niederstotzingen) is Gerstetten in about 15 minutes from the Federal Highway 8 to reach (junction Merklingen or Ulm-West) in about 25 minutes.

Bus route 75 connects Gerstetten and Gussenstadt with Heidenheim, bus route 70 runs from Gerstetten via Heldenfingen, Heuchlingen and Dettingen to Heidenheim ( HTV tariff). There are limited travel options to Ulm with line 585 ( DING tariff). The nearest train stations with regular passenger traffic are Heidenheim ( Brenzbahn Aalen – Ulm) and Geislingen an der Steige ( Filstalbahn Stuttgart – Ulm). Geislingen can only be reached by public transport from Gerstetten via long detours.

The operational historical local railway Amstetten – Gerstetten to Amstetten is used for museum railroad trips as well as freight traffic, which is also the financial mainstay of the railway.

Two kilometers east of the village, the Flugsportverein Gerstetten e. V. an airfield with the status of a special landing site .

Established businesses

The supplier industry for the automotive industry and other mainly medium-sized companies shape Gerstetten's economic image.

education

In the core town of Gerstetten there is a primary and secondary school and a special needs school in addition to the secondary school . Dettingen, Gussenstadt and Heldenfingen have their own primary schools.

Sports

The largest local popular sports club is the Verein für Leibesübungen Gerstetten e. V. with its five departments. For a long time before the turn of the millennium, the football department of VfL played together with the Heidenheimer Sportbund in the regional league. Then VfL had to go to the lowest division of the district league B. In the 2011/2012 round, however, the Gerstetter managed to move up from the district league A to the district league. In the last decisive game for promotion against Türkspor Heidenheim, who competed with a Gerstetter as coach, VfL won 5-0 goals among a good 500 spectators.

The neighboring club SV Heldenfingen, which has over 620 members, also played in the district and state league for several years. After the club merged in 1999 after relegation to the district league A with the RSV Heuchlingen to a game community, it was for a long time the top-class club in the entire community and only barely missed promotion to the district league between 2005 and 2007. After the championship and the promotion in 2007/2008, however, two years later you had to go back to the district league A and have since been unable to advance to the top regions of the table due to a greatly changed team.

In addition to SG Heldenfingen / Heuchlingen, VfL Gerstetten and TSV Gussenstadt, TSV Altheim / Alb from the neighboring Alb-Danube district also takes part in the Alb Cup of the Gerstetten municipality every year. This will be held for the 44th time in 2015.

Hiking opportunities

There are numerous hiking trails around Gerstetten , which lead through forests and fields in a very varied manner. Some of them are asphalted, some with gravel, but some are also marked meadow paths. These can be walked barefoot without any problems in summer.

Culture and sights

Churches

The Protestant Nikolauskirche is the oldest church in Gerstetten. The oldest parts go back to the time before the year 1150. The second church, the Evangelical Michael Church, was built in 1774. The images of the apostles from the end of the 16th century used to be in the organ gallery in Ulm Minster. In the district of Sontbergen is the small Protestant St. James Church. It was first mentioned in 1356. In 2004 she received windows from Sieger Köder .

Museums

In the district of Gussenstadt is the museum in the Ursula-Stift and Schmiede am Stift . With this museum Gussenstadt houses the oldest museum of its kind in Württemberg, which was founded in 1911 by Dr. phil. hc Georg Thierer - author of the two-volume local chronicle of Gussenstadt - was set up in the parish hall donated by his brother Valentin Thierer.

Gerstetten station

The railway museum and the reef museum, which has been an information point of the UNESCO Geopark Swabian Alb since 2004, are located in the Gerstetten train station (today the terminus of the local railway “Amstetten-Gerstetten”) . The historic, over 20 kilometers long local railway line between Gerstetten and Amstetten celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2006. The train has been run by the UEF Lokalbahn Amstetten-Gerstetten e. V. (Section of the Ulmer Eisenbahnfreunde e.V.) operated. All railway vehicles and the entire route are the property of the association.

Buildings

  • Falkenstein Castle in the Dettingen district
  • The Gerstetter water tower was built in 1982/83 and with a height of 40.57 meters is one of the most striking structures on the Heidenheimer Alb.

The Hungerwell Valley

The so-called Hungerbrunnen in the Hungerbrunnental near Heldenfingen is a karst spring that rarely has water. Popular belief is that if the spring gushes, this is a bad omen. The Heldenfinger Hungerbrunnen has been a Geopoint of the UNESCO Geopark Swabian Alb since 2019 . For a long time there was a so-called open space in the Hungerbrunnental that did not belong to any district or municipality. At that time, criminals stayed on this meadow, which is still known today, and many markets and festivals took place there, until the council in Ulm banned them.

Regular events

  • The Brezgenmarkt takes place in Hungerbrunnental near Heldenfingen on Palm Sunday . This shopkeeper market has been mentioned in a document since 1533 by Ulm council minutes. The access to the Brezgenmarkt is closed to cars. You either have to walk (approx. 20 minutes) from the parking lots or you can take the shuttle bus from Altheim (Alb) or Heuchlingen.
  • Between Gerstetten and Amstetten , on the tracks of the local Amstetten – Gerstetten railway , the Ulm Railway Friends Association has been organizing nostalgic trips with historical vehicles since 1997, including a steam locomotive built in 1921 and a railcar from 1956.
  • The Gerstetter Alb kite festival takes place on the first weekend after the summer holidays and has been organized by the Gerstetten flying club with the support of the Heidenheimer Albflyer since 1995
  • Every four years, the annual Alb Cup takes place on the sports field on the Altheimer Steige. This is played by the clubs VfL Gerstetten, SG Heldenfingen / Heuchlingen, TSV Gussenstadt and TSV Altheim / Alb on the weekend before the start of the point round (usually on the last weekend in July). The host changes every year.
