Brezgenmarkt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The pretzel market takes place every year on Palm Sunday in the Hungerbrunnental in the Heldenfingen district of the Gerstetten community .

history

The market was first mentioned in a document in 1533. It was not always peaceful, as the chronicles say. The festival was forbidden in 1705 by the city council of Ulm and later in 1730 by the government in Stuttgart because of quarrels. However, since at least 1843 the tradition of the market festival revived. In a senior office description published this year there are references to the origin of the name. During this time, young people would meet again and again on Palm Sunday to dance at the hunger well. Back then there were no stalls, only a few bakers were selling pretzels.

description

There are up to 160 market stalls around the karst spring Hungerbrunnen . This makes it one of the largest markets in Germany. Up to 35,000 visitors come to the Brezgenmarkt every year.

In 2020 the market was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
