Walther Zügel (born June 11, 1933 in Gerstetten ) is a German bank manager . From 1975 to 1996 he was chairman of the board of the Landesgirokasse Stuttgart .

education and profession

Walther Zügel was born as the son of a pastor in Gerstetten on the Swabian Alb , but grew up in Stuttgart .

After graduating from high school in Stuttgart, Zügel studied economics in Tübingen and Mannheim. In 1957 he completed his studies in Mannheim as a business graduate. In 1960 he was awarded a thesis on The Significance of Hidden Reserves for the Annual Financial Statements of the Stock Corporation: Fundamental Considerations on Efforts to Reform the Accounting Regulations of Stock Corporation Law in Mannheim summa cum laude for Dr. rer. pole. PhD.

Zügel began his professional career in 1958 as an auditor and business expert at Schitag Schwäbische Treuhand AG. One of his clients, Spinnweberei Uhingen GmbH, appointed him in 1963 as managing director of the company affected by the textile crisis at the time. It was successfully renovated under his leadership by 1965. From 1966 to 1969 he was a member of the management team at the Breuninger department store in Stuttgart .

Board member of the Landesgirokasse Stuttgart

In 1969 Zügel was appointed to the board of the Städtische Spar- und Girokasse Stuttgart , from 1972 he was its chairman. After the merger with the Württembergische Landessparkasse on April 1, 1975, he took over the chairmanship of the newly created Landesgirokasse Stuttgart , which he held until his retirement on September 30, 1996.

He was also a founding member and board member of the Stuttgart Community Foundation, co-founder and board member of the International Bach Academy Stuttgart , founding member of the Schiller National Museum / German Literature Archive support group , co-founder and chairman of the board of trustees of the International Hugo Wolf Academy , member of the board of trustees of the Academy for the Spoken Word in Stuttgart, chairman of the Württemberg State Theater Sponsorship Association and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Akademie Schloss Solitude . The Heilbronn Business School and the Academy for Information and Management Heilbronn-Franken were also co-founded by Zügel. As deputy chairman of the Unibund Hohenheim and the Ulm University Council, Zügel also worked in the scientific field. Zügel was chairman of the Wilhelma development association for 33 years ; today he is its honorary chairman. He was on the board of the Stuttgart gallery association for 34 years, eight of which as chairman.

Walther Zügel is a member of the CDU .

Large Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany , Staufer Medal in Gold of the State of Baden-Württemberg.

In 1995 he was awarded the Medal of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg , and in 2009 he received the honorary title of Professor of the State of Baden-Württemberg from Prime Minister Günther Oettinger . He is also an honorary doctor ( Dr. oec. Hc ) and honorary senator of the University of Hohenheim and the University of Stuttgart .
