Unterwachingen is a municipality in the Alb-Donau district in Baden-Württemberg .

The small village is still strongly influenced by agriculture and belongs to the Munderkingen municipal administration association.

Geographical location

Unterwachingen is located on the southern edge of the Danube Valley , about ten kilometers southwest of the city of Ehingen (Danube) , at 520 m above sea level on the Tobelbach, a small body of water that flows into the Danube near Rottenacker .

The m high 510-565 Gemarkung comprises 2.60 square kilometers, which 81% of agricultural land and 15% forest, which occupies the southern part of the municipality.

history

In the place mentioned in a document in 805 , a church was named in 1103 on the occasion of the consecration of the Emerkingen castle chapel . At that time Unterwachingen and the neighboring Emerkingen formed a political and ecclesiastical unit. The monastery emerged victorious from the long-lasting dispute between the Premonstratensian Monastery of Marchtal and the Lords of Emerkingen over the right of patronage in the 12th and 13th centuries . In the 14th and 15th centuries, Marchtal also acquired secular rights in the village. Until 1900 Emerkingen belonged as a branch of the parish Unterwachingen.

The place suffered severe damage in the Thirty Years' War after the Swedish invasion in 1632.

In the course of secularization , Unterwachingen came to the Thurn und Taxis family in 1803 , but was already incorporated into the Kingdom of Württemberg three years later , which assigned the village to the Riedlingen District Office. When it was dissolved in 1938, the district of Ehingen became part of the Alb-Donau district in 1973. During the time of incorporation, the small community was able to maintain its independence; since then she has been a member of the Munderkingen municipal administration association.

Municipal council

The community council in Unterwachingen has eight members. It consists of the voluntary councilors and the mayor as chairman. The mayor is entitled to vote in the municipal council. In the local elections on May 26, 2019 , the local council was elected by majority vote. Majority voting takes place if no or only one nomination has been submitted. The applicants with the highest number of votes are then elected. The turnout was 82.7% (2014: 88.1%).

• since May 2009: Hans Rieger. Rieger is also the mayor of Hausen am Bussen. In March 2017 he was re-elected in both places.

coat of arms

Blazon : Divided by silver and red; above a lying red double hook, below a silver key and a silver sword crossed diagonally.

An old coat of arms is not known. The present one was designed by the Stuttgart State Archives in the 1980s . It combines the double hook of the Lords of Emerkingen with the attributes of Saints Peter and Paul from the coat of arms of the Marchtal monastery.

Organ gallery of the parish church of St. Cosmas and Damian

The parish church of St. Cosmas and Damian is a unified Rococo building built between 1754 and 1756 , on which the following artists worked under the direction of the master builder Johann Caspar Bagnato :

• as painter of ceiling frescos and altar leaves by Joseph Ignaz Wegscheider from Riedlingen
• the young Ticino Giuseppe Pozzi , who at that time assisted his father Francesco with work in the Obermarchtal monastery, worked as plasterer

The sculptures of the church patron probably come from the workshop of Johann Joseph Christian .

Wegscheider and Pozzi also carried out the work in the St. Georg chapel in nearby Dietershausen , Uttenweiler community.

Culture

Chamber music group Unterwachingen

Since 1973 amateurs and professional musicians have been meeting in the historic rectory to practice classical chamber music together. Every year at the end of September the circle goes public with a church concert.
