history

Rule of the Imperial Knights

In the High Middle Ages, Untermarchtal was in the Duchy of Swabia . The rulership of the place was exercised in the 13th and first half of the 14th century by the Counts of Berg and the Lords of Steusslingen. Higher jurisdiction had been the responsibility of Upper Austria since the 14th century . In 1365 the Lords of Stein can be proven to have owned the castle in Untermarchtal. In 1442 the Speth von Ehestetten bought the rulership rights. The castle was destroyed in 1517 and the castle was built in its place from 1573 to 1576 by Johann Ulrich Speth. In 1604 the Speth were enfeoffed with the ban on blood. The Catholic parish church of St. Andrew in its current form dates back to 1613, with a restoration that took place from 1880 to 1888.

History since the 19th century

In the course of mediatization, Untermarchtal fell to the Electorate of Württemberg in 1805 , which was elevated to a kingdom in 1806 . In 1810 Württemberg assigned Untermarchtal to the Oberamt Ehingen . In 1870 Untermarchtal received its own station on the Danube Railway, with which the community was connected to the route network of the Württemberg State Railways . The Untermarchtal Monastery was built in the castle in 1886 . In 1938 the place came to the district of Ehingen and since 1973 to the Alb-Donau district.
