Öpfingen from the south

geography

Öpfingen is located on the southern edge of the Swabian Alb on the northern bank of the Danube between Ehingen and Ulm .

Neighboring communities

The community borders in the north on the Niederhofen district of the community Allmendingen , in the east on Oberdischingen and the city of Erbach , in the south on the district Rississen in the city of Ehingen and Griesingen and in the west on the district Gamerschwang in the city of Ehingen.

history

Öpfingen was first mentioned in a document in 1127. The place belonged to the Counts of Berg and from the early 16th century to the von Freyberg family, who sold their Öpfingen property to the Princes of Thurn and Taxis in 1809.

Georg Ludwig von Freyberg's sympathy for Kaspar von Schwenckfeld , to whom he entrusted the education of his sons, led to the so-called Öpfinger War, because even after his death in 1561 his sons and grandsons remained supporters of the Schwenckfeld cause. On the night of Easter Monday 1621, this ended with the capture of Georg Ludwig by Duke Leopold's troops. When Hieronymus Friedrich von Freyberg became a Catholic in 1660, the Counter Reformation was finally over.
