Dominicus Beck

Dominicus Beck OSB (born September 27, 1732 in Öpfingen , † February 22, 1791 in Salzburg ) was a German mathematician and physicist .

Life

Father Dominicus Beck was a Benedictine at the Abbey in Ochsenhausen , where he also studied. From 1762 he taught theoretical philosophy in Salzburg, from 1764 philosophy and mathematics in Ochsenhausen, and from 1766 mathematics and physics at the University of Salzburg. Beck was Dean of the Philosophical Faculty of the University in the years 1768–1769, 1777–1778 (also Fridolin Wibmer / Kremsmünster), 1783–1784, 1787–1788, 1790–1791 (also Bernhard Stöger / Oberalteich). Since 1763 he was a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . Beck stayed in Bad Gastein as a spa guest in 1779 . There is a pictorial representation of his person in his work "Letters of a Traveler on Mathematics" (by the painter Pietro Antonio Lorenzoni ) and there is a wax bust in St. Peter's Abbey .

Services

In 1778, under the supervision of Dominicus Beck, the first lightning rod in Salzburg was erected at Mirabell Palace . On May 12, 1786, one was built on Edmundsburg . He was the author of many writings and early works on electricity .
