Illerkirchberg is a municipality in the eastern Alb-Donau district in Baden-Württemberg .

Illerkirchberg is about eight kilometers south of Ulm and extends roughly between the Illertal in the east and the Weihungstal in the west.

geology

The type locality of the Kirchberg layers is in Illerkirchberg . The clay-rich, fossil-bearing layers (with shark teeth, brackish water clams, snails and fish) are part of the so-called. In Illerkirchberg, the Grimmelfinger layers also appear, which are counted among the deposits of the barley sand channel and which were also deposited in the fresh brackish water molasse during the Miocene and occur below the Kirchberg layers. They consist of gray to yellow-white sands. In addition, loess loam ceilings and gravel / gravel deposits from the Günz and Mindelkaltzeit appear in Illerkirchberg .

Oberkirchberg

Chirchberg was first mentioned in 1087. A distinction between the districts in Ober- and Unterkirchberg comes only in the 14th / 15th. Century on. From 1805 to 1810 the county of Kirchberg belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria , only to become part of the Kingdom of Württemberg in accordance with the border treaty between Bavaria and Württemberg of May 18, 1810 .

Unterkirchberg

First mention see at Oberkirchberg. Just like Oberkirchberg, Unterkirchberg belonged to the county of Kirchberg. The forts were connected by roads ( Donausüdstraße and Donautalstraße ) and were not used by legionaries, but by auxiliary troops ( auxiliary troops ). The fort was one of the largest on the Danube line and, judging by the finds, was probably occupied by a cavalry unit. The forts were later moved further north ( Alblimes from around 74 and 85 AD). The fort area was then used civilly for a few decades. Row graves that were found on the grounds of the elementary school date from the Alemanni period and the early Middle Ages. On the spur of the terrain on which the church stands today, moats and ramparts of a medieval castle were still visible until the 1960s. Today only the wall and the moat of the main castle on the Kreuzberg in front are preserved. Until the end of the 18th century, this part of the mountain was still called "Lower Castle". This castle is in the 11th / 12th The castle in Oberkirchberg has been inhabited by the Counts of Kirchberg ever since. The first Benedictines who founded the Wiblingen Monastery lived in this castle for the first few months until the monastery buildings were completed. In the centuries that followed, up to secularization , the Wiblingen monastery was able to gain significant influence in Unterkirchberg. The magnificent rectory still bears witness to this period. Like Oberkirchberg, Unterkirchberg was with Bavaria from 1805 to 1810 and with Württemberg from 1810.

Administrative affiliations since 1810

Ober- and Unterkirchberg belonged to the Württemberg Oberamt Wiblingen since 1810 (since 1842 Laupheim) . During the district reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg , the two communities came to the Ulm district in 1938 . In 1945 the localities became part of the American zone of occupation and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which became part of the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952. Since the district reform in Baden-Württemberg in 1973, Illerkirchberg has been part of the newly formed Alb-Danube district.
