history

Kirchberg on the Iller

It is possible that Kirchberg was first mentioned in a traditional note from the St. Gallen monastery in 806 , but research has disputed whether it is really Kirchberg an der Iller or another place of the same name. In 839 a lord von Isenburg bequeathed goods in Nordhofen to the Gallus Monastery. Later the Lords of Kirchberg and Schellenberg appear as the owners of Kirchberg. In 1356, Count Ulrich von Schellenberg and his wife Anna von Ellerbach, with the consent of their son Eglin von Schellenberg, the pastor of Kirchberg at that time, sell a share in the village of Kirchberg to the Rot monastery . The Rot monastery acquired a further share in 1692. The church in Kirchberg, which was now incorporated into the Rot monastery, was pastored by Fathers von Rot from this time until 1803. Count Wilhelm von Kirchberg lends goods to Heinrich von Freiberg in 1356. In the 15th century the local rule was divided between the lords of Rechberg-Hohenrechberg-Kellmünz and the patricians of Ulm; later Kirchberg was partly owned by the Oberbalzheim rulership.

In 1686 the gentlemen von Rechberg sold their stake in Kirchberg to the former Gutenzell monastery , which now shares ownership of Kirchberg with the Rot monastery. As a result of the wars with France, in the peace treaty of 1801, the German princes lose their possessions on the other side of the Rhine to France and are compensated with goods from the spiritual princes and monasteries on this side, i.e. on the right side of the Rhine. The ownership of the abolished Rot monastery falls to Count Ludwig von Wartenberg , who bequeaths it to his step-nephews, Counts Erbach-Erbach , who then also called themselves Counts von Wartenberg-Roth, and whose descendants sell part of it. When Gutenzell Abbey was abolished in 1803 and 1806, Gutenzell Abbey came into the possession of the Counts of Toerring-Jettenbach-Gutenzell and also came under Württemberg sovereignty; as compensation for their previous possessions on the left bank of the Rhine in Gronsfeld, which had come to France through Napoleon's tyranny. Count von Toerring showed himself to be very accommodating to the Cistercian order, as the sisters were allowed to stay in Gutenzell until their death.

On January 1, 1972, the previously independent community of Sinningen and its districts were incorporated into Kirchberg an der Iller.

Economy and Infrastructure

Kirchberg on the Iller

The Iller rafting, which was economically important for Kirchberg and Sinningen, was still operated at the beginning of the 20th century, albeit not to the same extent as in earlier times, on the Iller from Kempten to Ulm and from there on the Danube to Vienna. It was an interesting but also dangerous job.

The Sinninger See has developed into an important recreational area for the surrounding area.

The current economic structure of the municipality is a mixture of agriculture and trade.

Transport links

The A 7 motorway (Füssen - Ulm - Würzburg - Kassel - Flensburg) runs parallel to the Iller , and there are connections in Altenstadt (AS 125) and Dettingen (AS 126) (both approx. 10 km away). The municipal area is crossed in a north-south direction by the state road L 260 ( Memmingen - Ulm ). It runs in parts through the eastern area of the Kirchberg settlement area; the district of Sinningen is bypassed. The closest connection to the Deutsche Bahn rail network (Memmingen - Ulm route) is in Altenstadt, approx. 5 km away.

education

The primary and secondary school in Kirchberg comprises a single primary school and a single secondary school, of which, however, only students in grades 7–9 attend school in Kirchberg. The students in grades 5 and 6 go to the secondary school in Dettingen. From the school year 2010/2011, the secondary schools were merged to form the Illertal secondary school under one school management in order to preserve the small secondary school close to home.
