Geographical location

Ummendorf is located around five kilometers south of Biberach an der Riss and, like its southern district Fischbach, is traversed by a section of the Umlach, which flows further north into the Riss coming from the south . To the west of Ummendorf is the moor-rich Ummendorfer Ried , which is partially designated as a nature reserve. The plateau of the Hochgeländ rises south of Ummendorf . The municipality of Ummendorf is also on the Danube-Bodensee cycle path . The 1987 created natural swimming pool on the edge of the nature reserve Ummendorfer Ried, a relic of the Wurm Age , provides every year many visitors from far and wide recreation and bathing.

Community structure

In addition to the core town of the same name, the municipality of Ummendorf also includes the district of Fischbach as well as various hamlets and farmsteads , such as houses, Buschhorn, Ruckweg, Hammerschmiede, Winkel, Kalter Bach, Hatzenmähdle, Rehmoos, Möselsberg and Horn.

history

Until the 19th century

A Roman settlement of Ummendorf and the surrounding area between 100 and 250 AD could be proven by the discovery of a Roman manor ( villa rustica ) in the “Kirlohäcker” area. In 1880 the remains of the main building and two bathing buildings were excavated. The archaeologists came across the remains of a brick kiln, which was essential for the construction of the building, in 1960 in the gravel pit area around 250 meters west of it.

After Ummendorf since the 14th century, the monastery Weißenau shelter, it was to the Imperial Council in 1554 Matthias Manlich from Augsburg sold. After his death in 1565 the imperial abbey of Ochsenhausen acquired the village from his heirs. Due to the secularization, Fischbach came to the Prince of Metternich-Winneburg in 1803 . In 1806 Ummendorf came to the Kingdom of Württemberg as part of mediatization . When the new administrative structure was implemented , Ummendorf was subordinated to the Oberamt Waldsee from 1807 to 1808, then from 1809 to 1810 to the Oberamt Ochsenhausen and finally from 1811 to the Oberamt Biberach . Ummendorf remained part of the Ochsenhausen rulership until 1825, before Prince Metternich sold it to the Württemberg state.

20th century

During the administrative reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg , Ummendorf came to the Biberach district in 1938 . In 1945 the place became part of the French occupation zone and in 1947 it was assigned to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern , which was added to the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.

Churches and religions

Ummendorf is traditionally Roman Catholic . In the meantime, however, there is also a small evangelical community that has had its own church since 1970. The Catholic parish church of Ummendorf can be counted among the most impressive village churches in Upper Swabia.

Ummendorf is east of federal highway 30 and south of B 312 . The southern railway ( Ulm - Friedrichshafen ) runs west through the town, the next stop Biberach (Riß) Süd is about three kilometers away; the station Biberach is about five kilometers away. As part of the planning for a regional S-Bahn Donau-Iller, there are considerations to set up a train stop in Ummendorf as the final stop of a future S-Bahn line Ulm-Biberach. Culture and sights

Ummendorf is on the main route of the Upper Swabian Baroque Route . The fully functional hammer forge Kloos from 1586 in Fischbach is located on Mühlenstraße Oberschwaben . The Swabian-Alemannic Carnival is organized by the local Ried-Graddla fools ' guild with processions and balls .

Buildings

  • The Catholic Johanneskirche was rebuilt in 1805 in the baroque- classicist style. It is one of the most impressive village churches in Upper Swabia . The greatest treasure is the important Madonna by Hans Multscher from around 1450.
  • The Ummendorfer castle in the center of the village was in 1560 by Matthias Manlich , an Augsburg patrician and contemporaries of the Fugger and Welser built. It served as a rectory for a long time and is owned by the state of Baden-Württemberg. The municipality has rented the castle since January 1st, 2011. The cultural group organizes concerts, exhibitions and cabaret evenings there. The building is also used by the Biberach University of Applied Sciences. Since January 1, 2011 it has been possible to rent the space for private events.
  • The Horn castle in Fischbach is privately owned. From there you have an interesting view of the Umlach valley.

Others

  • A vineyard has been cultivated in the Fischbach district since 2002. The winegrowers of Upper Swabia harvested grapes for the first time in 2003.
  • The television series " Lindenstrasse " is named after Lindenstrasse in Ummendorf. Screenwriter Barbara Piazza wrote the series and character concept for "Lindenstrasse" together with Hans W. Geißendörfer and lived for several years on Lindenstrasse in Ummendorf.
