history

The company was founded in 1955 in the Neugablonz district of Kaufbeuren by Alois Berger. Production took place on an area of 105 m² with two employed skilled workers. The move to Ottobeuren was completed just two years later . In 1969 the company put the first six-spindle automatic lathe into operation. The location in Ottobeuren quickly became too small, so that it had to be constantly expanded between 1970 and 1973. In 1976 Alois Berger founded Ummendorfer Feintechnik GmbH in Ummendorf in the neighboring district of Biberach . The first foreign production facility was opened in Brampton , Canada as early as 1979 . In 1983 a new production hall was put into operation in Ummendorf. The Ottobeuren plant was expanded again in 1985.

In 1988, the old 60,000 m² industrial site including the buildings of the relocated company Stetter in the Memmingen district of Amendingen was acquired. This then became the headquarters of the Berger Group. Due to the high foreign demand, another plant outside Germany was built in Spartanburg in the US state of South Carolina in 1994 . In the same year, parts of the Deckel-Maho Group in Pfronten were taken over and another plant built in Wertach im Allgäu . The hardening shop moved from the Ottobeuren site to the newly built production facilities in Memmingen in 1996. The first Bergomat CTC 16 also went into production in 1996 . A subsidiary was founded in 1998 in Memmingen for this product range (A. B. Bergomat Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG). To establish Berger Holding GmbH & Co. KG, a new administration and production building with over 12,000 m² was built in Memmingen in 1999, which went into operation a year later. The seat of the GmbH & Co. KG remained in Memmingen through these construction measures. The subsidiary, ABH Härtetechnik GmbH & Co. KG (also based in Memmingen) was expanded in 2006 from 1,300 m² to 3,000 m². The next foreign establishment took place in 2004. Since then, production has been carried out in Kędzierzyn-Koźle , Poland , and in 2012 the production area doubled to approx. 6,000 m² through an extension. The leap to Asia was made in 2012 with the establishment of a plant in China. In 2013 a new building was built at the Ummendorf site.

The Berger Group is growing steadily both at home and abroad and now has a production area of over 88,000 m². Expansions are currently pending at the Ottobeuren and Memmingen locations.

Since the end of 2013, the company founder Alois Berger has withdrawn from the operational business and put the management in the hands of his children.
