The eight units built for the United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) based in Kuwait were built in 2007/08 at the Korean shipyard Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan . They are full container ships with superstructures four fifths aft above the machinery . Five of using cell guides provided cargo holds were located outside the deckhouse and two behind it. The 14 hatches are closed with pontoon hatch covers. The container space capacity is 6921 TEU. With a homogeneous load with 14-tonne 20-foot containers, the transport of up to 4898 TEU is possible. 486 integral refrigerated containers can be supplied on board the ships.

The drive system consists of a two - stroke diesel engine with an output of 68,382  kilowatts . The engine acts directly on a fixed propeller and helps the ships to reach a speed of 25.5  knots .

The lead ship of the class, the Al Safat , was delivered to the client in January 2008, the seven sister ships all followed in the course of the same year.

As a result of the merger of UASC with Hapag-Lloyd , the ships came to Hapag-Lloyd in 2017.
