Neptune Orient Lines Limited ( NOL ) is a Singaporean shipping company whose main activities are container shipping and supply chain management . In 2002, liner shipping (74%) and logistics (18%) made up the bulk of the business. NOL operates in Asia , Europe and America .
NOL was 68% owned by Temasek Holdings and 100% owned by American President Lines (APL). The company is listed in the Straits Times Index on the Singapore Exchange .
At the beginning of 2008, the majority shareholder Temasek examined a takeover of the TUI container division ( Hapag-Lloyd ) in order to merge it with the NOL to form the third largest container shipping company. In mid-October 2008 the purchase intentions were withdrawn.
In mid-2016, the French container shipping company CMA CGM acquired the majority of Temasek's shares in order to take over NOL. The acquisition was completed on September 6, 2016.
