American President Lines Ltd. (APL for short) is one of the largest container ship shipping companies in the world. In mid-2015 the APL owned 92 ships with a capacity of 560,597 TEU .
Until the summer of 2016, it was a 100% subsidiary of Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) based in Singapore . As part of the global consolidation of the container shipping industry, the shipping company was sold to the French CMA CGM Group. APL has been fully integrated into the CMA CGM balance sheet since the third quarter of 2016.
history
In 1938, the US government took over the management of Dollar Steamship Co., which had run into financial difficulties, and transferred the remaining assets to the American President Lines that had just been formed .
The company provided trans-Pacific and round-the-world services, but the war in Europe disrupted business. After the United States entered the war, the entire fleet was confiscated for troop transport .
After the Second World War, APL resumed passenger shipping with the President Cleveland and President Wilson, which were completed in 1947 and 1948 .
With the type C11 ships put into service from 1988 , the shipping company operated the world's largest container ships with 4,826 TEU at the time.
In 1998 APL was taken over by the shipping company Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) from Singapore. NOL decided to continue the container line under the APL brand. NOL became the APL holding company and was taken out of the market as an active container shipping company.
Since 2013, APL has owned ULCS container ships of the APL Temasek type with a capacity of 14,000 TEU.

34 new container ships will have the technical requirements for a shore connection and three berths at the APL terminal in Oakland will be equipped with the necessary technology. The APL terminal in Los Angeles received gantry cranes with energy recovery when lowering the containers. In 2012, a sulfur scrubber was installed on a test basis in order to gain experience with this method of emission reduction.
