environmental Protection

OOCL was the first container shipping company in the world to be certified according to the "Safety, Quality and Environmental (SQE) Management System" (this includes the requirements of the ISM Code, ISO 9001.2000 and ISO 14001). It held 100 percent compliance with the Port of Long Beach Green Flag program in 2006 and 2007. OOCL donated the resulting benefits of USD 140,000  to projects in the Long Beach area.

OOCL also complies with the “Qualship 21” program, which examines the quality of ship management on ships not sailing under the US flag, and maintains the most rigid safety and environmental standards worldwide.

OOCL has been running a bunker saving program since 2001 , which is an effective way to reduce greenhouse gases (especially CO 2 ). Initiatives to reduce fuel consumption are, for example, weather-controlled route systems in order to be able to travel the shortest routes safely - the most balanced load distribution on every ship to achieve a minimum of ballast water - fuel injections and the optimization of valve control to achieve the best effectiveness - regular maintenance, especially around the hull to keep them clean of any mussels or algae that would increase the friction in the water and thus increase fuel consumption. Maintenance also includes polishing the propeller.

safety

OOCL participates in the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism program (C-TPAT). This is a voluntary government-to-business initiative to build cooperative relationships that, in addition to strengthening and improving logistics chains, also serves to increase the security of US borders. OOCL also complies with the requirements of the “International Ship and Port Facility Security Code ( ISPS Code)” and the “ Container Security Initiative (CSI)” as well as the “US Customs 24-Hour Advance Cargo Manifesto Declaration Rule”.

OOCL Logistics

history

OOCL was founded in Shanghai in 1947 by Tung Chao Yung, better known as CY Tung as "Orient Overseas Line". CY Tung dreamed of building the first Chinese merchant fleet at an early age. In 1947 a dream came true when a ship in his fleet reached the Atlantic coast of North America and Europe for the first time , led by an all-Chinese crew. Regular cargo and passenger routes emerged from this under the name "Orient Overseas Line". In 1949, Tung, who was close to the Kuomintang , relocated his company to Hong Kong because of the Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War . When containerization began in 1969, the "Orient Overseas Container Line" emerged. At that time, OOCL was the first Asian shipping company to transport containerized cargo across the Pacific , thereby significantly influencing the face of trade in the Asia-Pacific region.

At its peak, OOCL had a fleet of over 150 cargo ships with a capacity of more than 10 million tons, making it one of the world's seven leading shipping companies. She owned the world's largest ship ever built, the Seawise Giant tanker .

When the name was changed to “Orient Overseas Container Line” in 1969, ships of the “Victory-class” were able to transport 300 TEU (= 20-foot containers ), a long way from today's post-Panamax ships that sail the world's oceans today. In April 2003, the OOCL Shenzhen, at that time the largest ship in the SX class with 8063 TEU, was delivered to OOCL.

After the death of CY Tung in 1982, CH Tung took over the management of Orient Overseas (International) Limited (OOIL), OOCL's parent company, for 14 years . In 1996, management was passed to CC Tung, as CH Tung was elected governor of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region .

In 1995 the OOCL merged with Hapag-Lloyd AG , NYK and MISC to form the “Grand Alliance”, which was then the largest liner consortium. In November 2016 the "Ocean Alliance" was founded with China COSCO Shipping Corporation , CMA CGM and Evergreen Marine .

In July 2017, COSCO Shipping Holdings Co Ltd , a subsidiary of China COSCO Shipping Corporation , and Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) submitted a takeover bid for Orient Overseas International Ltd (OOIL) worth $ 6.3 billion. The takeover is expected to be completed by the end of June 2018.

Since 1989, the names of OOCL-owned or operated ships have been made up of the prefix "OOCL" and another name.
