history

The captain Chang Yung-fa founded the Evergreen Marine Corporation in 1968 with a single general cargo ship that was operated as a tramp ship . The first liner service went into operation with the purchase of the second ship between Taiwan and the Middle East. This is how the company's ascent began in the 1970s. In 1972, the first office outside Taiwan opened in Tokyo . In 1974, EMC founded the first overseas company in New York . In 1975 Evergreen started its first full container service.

In the following decade, the shipping company gained a foothold all over the world. In 1984 Evergreen began offering global liner service in both east and west directions. In 1985 Evergreen finally succeeded in becoming the world market leader in container shipping.

Evergreen has now expanded primarily through acquisitions of other shipping companies. In 1984, EMC first came to Uniglory Marine Corp. (Taiwan) added to the company. Evergreen Marine later bought the British Hatsu Marine Ltd. (2002) and the Italian shipping company Italia Marittima (1993). The fleet grew continuously. In 2002 EMC operated 130 container ships, in 2008 it had 178. In 2015, over 195 container ships operated for Evergreen Marine. The founder, Chang Yung-fa, was the company's president until his death, as well as a billionaire and recipient of the Grand Cross of Merit due to Evergreen's contribution to the development of the Port of Hamburg.

In November 2016, the "Ocean Alliance" was founded with China COSCO Shipping Corporation , Orient Overseas Container Line and CMA CGM .
