The Evergreen S-Class is a series of container ships operated by the Taiwanese shipping company Evergreen Marine .

history

Rear view of the Ever Shine

Evergreen Marine ordered the series from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan in mid-2003 . In 2005, delivery of the first four newbuildings to the Evergreen subsidiary Hatsu Marine, based in London, began. These four units classified at Lloyd's Register were given names beginning with the shipping company name "Hatsu", followed by a second term beginning with the letter "S". In the years 2006 to 2008, six units classified by the American Bureau of Shipping followed for other Evergreen subsidiaries, whose names were composed of the term "Ever" and also a term beginning with the letter "S". The preceding "Hatsu" on the first four ships was replaced by "Ever" in 2008/09 after the name was changed from Hatsu Marine to Evergreen Marine (UK).

The S-Class ships are used on services between the Far East and Europe.

The Ever Superb was awarded the title Ship of the Year in 2006 by Lloyd's List Maritime Asia for its numerous environmentally friendly innovations . In November 2011, the Discovery Channel TV broadcast a report on the shipping company's S-Class "Greenships".

The Ever Summit collided with a container bridge while mooring at the Deltaport container terminal in Vancouver on January 28, 2019 and caused it to collapse.

Due to their dimensions, the S-class ships were classified as post-Panamax container ships during construction and, since the completion of the new locks on the Panama Canal, as Neopanamax container ships.

The ship type has a capacity of 7024 TEU, 839 parking spaces can be filled with refrigerated containers. The ships have eight holds equipped with cell guides, in which 15 rows of containers can be stowed transversely. The holds are closed with pontoon hatch covers, on which 17 rows of containers can be stowed transversely. The deckhouse of the ships is about four fifths of the length aft. A special feature is the deck structure with two chimneys, which is typical for Evergreen ships, and extends over the entire width of the ship.

The ships known as "Greenships" or "Eco ships" were provided with numerous environmental protection innovations that were first implemented at Evergreen. The hull of the S-type was built as a double-hulled ship with high-strength steel and designed with a view to reducing the amount of ballast water and protected bunker tanks in order to meet MARPOL regulation 12A , which has been in force since August 2007 . The machine system is designed for cold ironing in order to enable low exhaust emissions during the time in port. The tail shaft seal seals with air instead of oil. The Greenship concept was continued in the larger Evergreen L-Class built afterwards .

The propulsion system consists of ten-cylinder two-stroke Mitsubishi Sulzer 10RTA96C engines that enable speeds of over 25 knots.
