Hans Englishman

Hans Engländer (born August 31, 1914 in St. Wendel ; † April 13, 2011 ) was a German ornithologist and book collector .

Engländer studied biology in Freiburg and Munich . He did his doctorate with Karl von Frisch . He also received his doctorate in medicine in 1943 . He then worked as a hospital doctor and was taken prisoner of war . In 1948 he became a scientific assistant at the Zoological Institute of the University of Cologne . He completed his habilitation in 1953 and continued to work as a university lecturer.

After being a prisoner of war, he began building up his collection of ornithological literature. He bought from well-known antiquarians and auction houses around the world. He acquired historical top pieces from the incunable period from this area of ​​scientific literature. By testamentary disposal this important collection in Europe has gone from about 4,000 volumes in the possession of the university and public library Cologne over.
