It has the lowest metallicity of all known star clusters in the inner region of the Milky Way and, according to astronomers, was formed in the early phase of our galaxy.

The object was discovered in 1986 by the astronomer Stanislav George Djorgovski in an image taken by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) . Together with Djorgovski 1, the globular cluster Djorgovski 2 was also discovered on the IRAS images.
