Marugame ( Japanese 丸 亀 市 , - shi ) is a port city on the Seto Inland Sea in Kagawa Prefecture in Japan .

Marugame is an old castle town and has one of only twelve wooden castle towers preserved in their original state in all of Japan ( Marugame Castle ).

Marugame is also famous for its uchiwa production (fans). About 90% of all fans made in Japan come from Marugame.

Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art
  • The Iinoyama , also called Sanuki-Fuji, is a mountain between Marugame and Sakaide. He is one of the "Seven Fuji of Sanuki " ( 讃 岐 七 富士 , Sanuki nana-Fuji ).
  • Shiwaku-Kimbansho on the Honjima of the Shiwaku Islands , which belongs to Marugame , an administrative complex reconstructed in the 19th century, today a museum on the history of the pirates of Shiwaku Suigun .
  • Nakazuban-Shōen, a 17th-century Japanese garden with the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art .

history

Marugame was elevated to the status of a city (shi) in April 1899 during the Meiji period as the 53rd place. In the Shōwa period of the 1940s and 1950s, areas in the southeast and some islands were added to the city. In 1999 the city of Marugame celebrated its 100th anniversary.

On March 22, 2005, Ayauta and Hanzan parishes merged with Marugame.

The leading Japanese shipbuilding company, Imabari Shipbuilding , built a new shipyard in 2017 for almost 300 million euros. a. Evergreen 20,000 TEU types are launched.

In Marugame is the Marugame Stadium of the Kagawa Prefecture ( Kagawa kenritsu Marugame kyōgijō ), which can seat 30,000 spectators. The first Sunday in February is the start and finish of the Kagawa Marugame Half Marathon .

The Marugame Kyōteijō near the train station is one of two motorboat racetracks on Shikoku.
