The Compagnie Générale Transatlantique SA ( CGT ) was a semi-public French shipping company headquartered in Paris . The home port for the ships was Le Havre on the Channel coast. The shipping company operated freight and passenger services to North and Central America and the Mediterranean . Some of the most beautiful and largest passenger ships with names like Ile de France , Normandie and France were in service for the CGT , Transat and French Line .

In 1861, the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique SA was founded to operate freight and passenger services to North and Central America as well as the state-subsidized mail transport on these routes. Founders of the shipping company were the brothers Émile (1800–1875) and Isaac Pereire (1806–1880), who were led by Emperor Napoléon III. who had received postal rights on these routes.

Under the leadership of the Pereire brothers, the CGT rose to become the largest shipping company in France and one of the leading shipping companies in the world. In a short time several passenger steamers were ordered from British shipyards, all of them still side-wheel steamers. In 1866, the Péreire and the Ville de Paris, the first screw steamers came into service. Since the postal convention with the imperial government stipulated that the majority of the ships to be used would be built in France, the brothers founded the Chantiers de Penhoet shipyard in Saint-Nazaire in January 1862 with the Scottish shipbuilder John Scott . From this shipyard, what is now France's largest shipyard , the Chantiers de l'Atlantique, developed . In 1865 the shipping company's fleet already consisted of 27 ships of all types, in 1888 there were a remarkable 69. In 1878 the shipping company started liner services in the Mediterranean, mainly on the routes from the French Mediterranean ports to the North African coast to the then important French ones Provinces / Colonies / Protectorates of Algeria , Tunisia and Morocco .

In 1877 Eugène Péreire, the son of Isaac Péreire, became President of the CGT, which he chaired until 1904. Under him, some technical innovations were introduced on the ships of the line, such as electric lights, refrigerated holds and the conversion of the paddle steamers to screw drives. In 1891 the company's Touraine embarked on its first Mediterranean cruise. Nevertheless, the CGT ranked far behind the British and German competition in passenger transport. Although the shipping company was interested in fast and efficient ships because of the postal subsidies, no express record breakers were ever built. In view of the enormous increase in operating costs at the same time, one of the CGT presidents once said " The caviar costs less than the coal ".

The shipping company had to be forced to build fast passenger ships by special law. At the beginning of the 20th century, the line commissioned a number of larger ships in quick succession. In 1900 and 1901 respectively, the La Lorraine and La Savoie, the first ships with more than 10,000 GRT, went into service. A 13,000-tonner followed in 1906 with La Provence and in 1912 with France, the first 20,000-tonner and France's only four-chimney. The First World War interrupted this development and brought the shipping company some severe losses in crews and ships. The larger passenger ships mostly came through the war undamaged, so that the shipping company was able to continue seamlessly at the beginning of the 1920s.

In 1921 the Paris , measured at 34,569 GRT, began operations, and in 1926, the Ile de France (43,153 GRT), one of the most famous transatlantic liners ever. The CGT expanded on all routes, the golden age dawned for the shipping company. With the ships Lafayette (1930, 25,178 GRT) and Champlain (1932, 28,124 GRT) important reinforcements for the transatlantic service joined the fleet. In 1935, the Penhoët shipyard delivered its masterpiece with Normandy , not only because it was the largest ship in the world at 79,280 GRT (later increased to 83,423 GRT through conversion), but also the fastest at 30 knots . The Normandie was France's only holder of the Blue Riband .

In the late 1930s, the shipping company hit an unusual wave of ship losses. In 1938 the Lafayette burned down in Le Havre, as did the Paris in 1939 . The Second World War , which broke out in 1939, meant almost the total loss of the fleet. In 1940 the Champlain sank after a mine hit at La Palice , and in 1942 Normandy , the pride of France, burned out in New York during conversion work into a troop transport .

At the end of the war, the shipping company faced a fresh start. Of the proud fleet of large passenger ships, only the Ile de France and the smaller De Grasse from 1924 remained. The pre-war freighter fleet was no better. In 1946, the CGT received the Europa des NDL from the pool of surviving German ships , which went into service as Liberté for the CGT. The major changes in shipping that began in the early 1960s made major newbuilding programs nonsensical, but the aging liners Ile de France and Liberté required a new building. In 1961 the France (66,348 GRT) went into operation, France's last luxury liner in the classic style. By airplane passenger services, however, were no longer tenable, and in 1974 the French government cut the subsidies. The France was decommissioned and passenger services were suspended.

The CGT was restructured in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1969 the Mediterranean services with the Cie. Navigation Mixte SA to Cie. Générale Trans-Mediterranée (CGTM) merged, which in 1976 became the state ferry service Société nationale maritime Corse Méditerranée . In 1974 the freight division of CGT merged with Cie. from Messageries Maritimes SA to Compagnie Générale Maritime (CGM). CGM became one of the largest container shipping companies in the world and was privatized in 1999 with the Compagnie Maritime d'Affrètement to form the CMA CGM Group.
