The Bergensfjord (II) was a passenger ship of the Norwegian Den norske Amerikalinje , which entered service in 1956 and remained in service for the shipping company until 1971. After several sales and renaming, the ship was in Greece from 1978 , before it sank on August 17, 1980 after a fire that broke out during renovation work in Perama and can still be seen there as a wreck.

history

The Bergensfjord was built under construction number 1849 at Swan Hunter in Wallsend and was launched on July 18, 1955. Godmother was Princess Astrid of Norway . After delivery to the Den norske Amerikalinje on May 14, 1956, the ship began the liner service from Norway to New York . It could also be used for cruises .

The Bergensfjord remained in liner service for Den norske Amerikalinje for fifteen years before it was sold as De Grasse to the French Compagnie Générale Transatlantique in 1971 and remained in service there for two years. A planned resale to the Italian Home Lines in 1973 failed before the ship went to Thoresen & Company, based in Singapore , as Rasa Sayang in the same year .

The wreck of the Rasa Sayang in 2000

1978 was Rasa Sayang as Golden Moon at Sunlit Cruises, based in Cyprus sold to Piraeus transferred where it on 11 December 1978 launched was. A new commissioning did not take place. Two years later the ship changed hands again with the Greek Aphrodite Maritime Company. It got its old name Rasa Sayang and was to be converted in Perama for future use as a cruise ship when a fire broke out in the engine room on August 17, 1980. The Rasa Sayang was towed out of port before listing off the coast of Salamis and capsizing. Her wreck lies off the coast of the Kynosoura peninsula to this day.
