Burkhard Josef Berkmann (* 1976 in Bregenz ) is an Austrian Catholic theologian , legal scholar and canon lawyer . He is a supporter of the ecumenical movement.

Life

After completing his Matura at the Bundesgymnasium Gallusstrasse in Bregenz, Burkhard Berkmann studied philosophy , Catholic theology and law in Innsbruck , Paris , Munich and Rome and received his doctorate in theology and doctorate in law from the Leopold-Franzens-University Innsbruck in 2006 . In 2007 he obtained his licentiate in canon law at the Klaus Mörsdorf degree in canonology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and then worked as a consultant in the legal and property department of the diocese of St. Pölten and as a judge at the local diocese court. In the university year 2009/10 he held a visiting professorship at the Canon Institute of the University of Potsdam . From 2012 he was an associate professor for canon law at the Philosophical-Theological University of St. Pölten . In 2015 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on non-Christians in the law of the Catholic Church at the University of Lucerne .

As successor to Helmuth Pree, he has held the chair for canon law, in particular for theological foundations of canon law, general norms and constitutional law, as well as for oriental canon law at the Klaus Mörsdorf degree in canonology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich since October 2016 .
