The Bundesgymnasium Gallusstraße (BG Gallusstraße) is an Austrian federal high school in the Vorarlberg state capital Bregenz .

history

Marienberg Monastery in Villa Raczyński (2008); today a seminar house

The Dominican convent founded a private monastery school in 1878, the oldest forerunner of the current federal high school. In 1924, Marienberg Abbey made the rooms available for a girls 'high school, the teachers and the director came from the boys' high school. In 1935 the Realgymnasium became an upper lyceum with two types of school: upper lyceum and women's high school .

After Austria was annexed to the National Socialist German Reich in 1938, the Dominican Sisters at Marienberg Abbey were forbidden to run the school. School and student dormitory were nationalized. The aim of the school and the curriculum were brought into line with Reich German types. The school was renamed Oberschule für Mädchen . In 1944 the school had to move temporarily to the boys' grammar school on Gallusstrasse because the Marienberg monastery was used as a military hospital. There they tried to continue the lessons as well as possible. In 1945 the school was closed due to the war.

In September 1945 the school began to be rebuilt. The re-establishment was a difficult undertaking, although it was approved by the Vorarlberg regional committee . Moving into different buildings was considered. First, the school was able to move into a couple of rooms in the boys' grammar school on Gallusstrasse, which the students prepared themselves. The first school year started in October 1945.

From 1945 to 1949, the former Minister of Education, Emil Schneider, was the first director of the Bundesrealgymnasium for girls in Bregenz.

Former St. Gallus Benedictine Abbey (2009); today Vorarlberg State Library

On April 24, 1946, the school moved to the St. Gallusstift Benedictine monastery, the current building of the Vorarlberg State Library . In August 1946 the school was converted into a secondary school for girls and the 1938 curriculum returned. Two years later it became a state educational institution.

After the boys' grammar school moved to the newly built Bundesgymnasium Blumenstrasse, the school moved to its current location, Gallusstrasse 4.

The school has been run in co-education since 1982 .

Architecture and buildings

The design of the listed main building for the original boys' high school comes from the Stuttgart architects E. & R. Schleicher. The architects were Grässel , Klingel, Dietrich and master builder Wacker. The groundbreaking took place on May 6, 1912. In the spring of 1913, the interior work was started. On September 1, 1913, the new high school was completed. The building is characterized by Swabian-rural Art Nouveau.

The main building houses the administration, twelve classrooms, several specialist rooms and the school canteen. The learning and information center (LIZ) is housed in the former director's house on the street side, which is part of the listed ensemble . One of the special features of the Gallus Federal High School is a weather station located on the roof of the building. The ZAMG's measurement data for Bregenz is collected there.

In 1986 an underground gymnasium was built.

From 2010 to 2011, after an architecture competition, a four-story, free-standing new building for school purposes was built in place of an earlier outbuilding from the 1960s, in which there are another sixteen classrooms (lower level) and several specialist rooms (natural sciences, IT and handicrafts) . The project by HEIN architects from Bregenz received recognition from the Austrian builder award in 2014 .

Four other classes are housed in the neighboring former Capuchin monastery.
Following the completion of the extension in 2012, the existing listed building was upgraded in a second construction phase. The work included the retrofitting of a cafeteria with a dining room, the expansion of the teachers' work areas and the installation of an escape staircase and a lift.

Teaching company

At the school, English, French and Latin are taught as compulsory subjects, and Italian and Spanish can be chosen as elective subjects from year 6 onwards. Students are given the opportunity to take English language certificates and a computer driver's license. The school management endeavors to provide a wide range of optional subjects which, if possible, cover all subject areas and, provided there are five participating students, can come about. In order to bring schoolchildren closer to work in the social field, there is the Public Service project , in which sixth graders work once a week in a social institution.

The school attaches great importance to independent learning, free work and group work. There are always various projects initiated by committed teachers and students, such as Boost (a tutoring program by students for students), school mediation and English In Action , as well as various environmental projects such as the school biotope.

An important focus is the development of social skills in order to protect the community from bullying and conflict. It is also promoted and improved through winter sports and project weeks and various optional subjects. The LIZ, which offers a small library and space to work, is very much appreciated by the students.
